2. LETTER FROM THE COMPILER

===========================

15 May 2003 (Appearance day of Lord Nrisimhadeva)

Dear Prabhus and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All

glories to our spiritual masters and Vaishnavas following Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada often pointed out that the ceremony of sacred marriage is a

sacrifice, a purificatory process for advancing a human being to the

spiritual life of Krishna consciousness.

"There are many purificatory processes for advancing a human being to

spiritual life. The marriage ceremony, for example, is considered to be one

of these sacrifices. It is called vivaha-yajna.... Vivaha-yajna, the

marriage ceremony, is meant to regulate the human mind so that it may become

peaceful for spiritual advancement. For most men, this vivaha-yajna should

be encouraged even by persons in the renounced order of life. Sannyasis

should never associate with women, but that does not mean that one who is in

the lower stages of life, a young man, should not accept a wife in the

marriage ceremony. All prescribed sacrifices are meant for achieving the

Supreme Lord. Therefore, in the lower stages, they should not be given up."

(Bg. 18.5, purport)

In the Bhagavad-gita, Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead,

teaches that human beings must perform such activities of sacrifice in the

mode of goodness in order to achieve Krishna.

"Regulated occupational duties, as prescribed in the scriptures in terms of

the different orders and divisions of society, performed without attachment

or proprietary rights and therefore without any love or hatred, and

performed in Krsna consciousness for the satisfaction of the Supreme,

without self-satisfaction or self-gratification, are called actions in the

mode of goodness. (Bg. 18.23, purport)

When we perform the same activities with a desire to enjoy sense

gratification, they are considered to be performed in the mode of passion.

Activities in the mode of passion simply increase our insatiable desires to

enjoy our senses and thus lead to frustration. This is simply a matter of

common experience and an instruction from the Lord:

"The mode of passion is born of unlimited desires and longings, O son of

Kunti, and because of this the embodied living entity is bound to material

fruitive actions." (Bg. 14.7)

The question may then arise, How is it possible for us to perform activities

of sacrifice, such as marriage, without desire for fruitive results, or

desire for sense gratification?

The answer is, by depending on Krishna, by sincerely praying to Krishna to

free us from material desires, by pleasing Him, we can become free from

material desires.

In this regard, we can note with profit a prayer offered by Sri Prahlada

Maharaja to Lord Nrisimhadeva in the Srimad Bhagavatam:

om namo bhagavate narasimhaya namas tejas-tejase avir-avirbhava vajra-nakha

vajra-damshtra karmasayan randhaya randhaya tamo grasa grasa om svaha.

abhayam abhayam atmani bhuyishtha om kshraum.

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Nrsimhadeva, the source of all

power. O my Lord who possesses nails and teeth just like thunderbolts,

kindly vanquish our demonlike desires for fruitive activity in this material

world. Please appear in our hearts and drive away our ignorance so that by

Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existence in this

material world."

Even though Srila Prabhupada's purport to this text is somewhat lengthy, I

shall quote it in its entirety:

Purport: In Srimad-Bhagavatam (4.22.39) Sanat-kumara speaks the following

words to Maharaja Prithu:

yat-pada-pankaja-palasa-vilasa-bhaktya

karmasayam grathitam udgrathayanti santah

tadvan na rikta-matayo yatayo 'pi ruddha-

srotoganams tam aranam bhaja vasudevam

"Devotees always engaged in the service of the toes of the Lord's lotus feet

can very easily become free from hard-knotted desires for fruitive

activities. Because this is very difficult, the nondevotees -- the jnanis

and yogis -- cannot stop the waves of sense gratification, although they try

to do so. Therefore you are advised to engage in the devotional service of

Krishna, the son of Vasudeva."

Every living being within this material world has a strong desire to enjoy

matter to his fullest satisfaction. For this purpose, the conditioned soul

must accept one body after another, and thus his strongly fixed fruitive

desires continue. One cannot stop the repetition of birth and death without

being completely desireless. Therefore Srila Rupa Gosvami describes pure

bhakti (devotional service) as follows:

anyabhilashita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam

anukulyena krishnanu-shilanam bhaktir uttama

"One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Krishna

favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive

activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional

service." Unless one is completely freed of all material desires, which are

caused by the dense darkness of ignorance, one cannot fully engage in the

devotional service of the Lord. Therefore we should always offer our prayers

to Lord Nrisimhadeva, who killed Hiranyakasipu, the personification of

material desire. Hiranya means "gold," and kasipu means "a soft cushion or

bed." Materialistic persons always desire to make the body comfortable, and

for this they require huge amounts of gold. Thus Hiranyakasipu was the

perfect representative of materialistic life. He was therefore the cause of

great disturbance to the topmost devotee, Prahlada Maharaja, until Lord

Nrisimhadeva killed him. Any devotee aspiring to be free of material desires

should offer his respectful prayers to Nrisimhadeva as Prahlada Maharaja did

in this verse. (Bhag. 5.18.8 and purport)

On this auspicious appearance day of Lord Nrisimhadeva, let us pray to Him

as Prahlada Maharaja did, for freedom from material desires -- so that we

may become truly peaceful in our endeavors to carry out our prescribed

duties while in material existence and attain the eternal blissful like of

knowledge in Krishna consciousness.

Your servant,

Vidvan-Gauranga Das

3. ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE NEWSLETTER

========================================

By the grace of Srila Prabhupada and the efforts of his sincere followers,

the number of practicing devotees in ISKCON is increasing all over the

world.

Most of such devotees do desire to get married. However, at often times,

devotees end up marrying nondevotees, forgetting the following instruction

of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead:

asat-sanga-tyaga - ei vaishnava-achara

"A Vaishnava should always avoid the association of the nondevotees."

And because of the influence of nondevotee association, such marriages

generally do not help the devotees increase their Krishna consciousness.

Therefore HH Jayapataka Maharaja and several other leaders of ISKCON have

expressed their desire that devotees be practically helped via matrimonial

arrangements to find an appropriate Krishna conscious spouse.

In an attempt to help fulfill their desire, I have started a fortnightly

matrimonial e-mail newsletter which will publish matrimonial information of

ISKCON devotees in a way similar to how newspapers publish such matrimonial

information.

Subscription is by e-mail only and is free for devotees and members of

ISKCON.
