Guest guest
Hi Aaron, It was wonderful to meet with you at the dharma conference. I've spent some time to think more about our meeting. Several things came to mind in relation to ROOPA or the correlation of activities to economic outcomes. Here's a couple questions I have in that regard which I thought you may find interesting yourself if not prepared for them. How many specieis of animals (and plants if possible) is Mc Donalds responsible for permanently ending into extinction. We know that we are losing so many species a day in the number of acres lost through primarily modern produtions of agri etc. So if Mc Donalds for example is using 22% of that devastated tropical rainforest then we know that Mc Donalds is responsible for 22% of that extinction per year multiplied by how many years. Not to target Mc Donalds per say, they simply make for such an obvious example. A break down of the largest offenders though would be insightful, not just to beat up on those companies, but to provide a new consideration for them to evaluate. Is this something your organization would be able to research or know of others who could? Secondly, would you have the stats on how many animals etc are saved over the course of vegetarians life time would they have otherwise eaten meat and how much that saves in natural resources per year and per vegetarian. Last but not least, I would be very interested to know how many lifes your organization has saved if you could begin to put a number on it. Your friend, Raghu PS. Personally and on behalf of PETA I want to thank you for your concern for animals and your interest in learning more and doing more to help reduce animal suffering. I was energized to find so many people who care deeply about animals and who are ready to take a stand for them. First of all, let me provide my personal contact details: aarongross (AT) post (DOT) harvard.edu ; 805-636-9182. If I can be of help in any way, let me know. I began discussions with many of you that I would enjoy continuing, so please do drop me a line. As you know, the best way to help animals is not to eat animal products or wear animal skins. PETA has a variety of resources available to help you go vegan, find alternatives to leather, and to share your concern about animal suffering with others. Let me point out a few that may be especially useful based on the concerns many of you expressed to me. ORDER A FREE VEGETARIAN STARTER KIT This is packed with information about veganism. Check it out and/or order one for yourself or a friend at http://www.goveg.com/vegkit/index.html. For more information on the problems with dairy specifically check out www.MilkSucks.com <http://www.milksucks.com/> . VIDEOS Many of you saw some of the undercover footage PETA has taken of how animals are abused in the meat, dairy, and egg industries, and you asked me if you could get a copy of the video. Actor Alec Baldwin has narrated this footage in PETA's "Meet Your Meat" video. You can order the video or download it for free at: http://www.meetyourmeat.com/ . Sharing this video with others or showing it at a public event is a great way to introduce people to veganism. PETA also has a non-graphic video designed for younger children that you might show in a public or religious school; check out http://www.sharetheworld.com/ for details. GETTING ACTIVE ON CAMPUS There are tremendous opportunities to get active for animals on college campuses. Several of you expressed interest in working to get more veggie meals in campus dining halls-this is one of the best things you can possible do! Check out www.CollegeActivist.com <http://www.collegeactivist.com/> for lots of helpful information on how to "veganize your dining hall," other ways to get active, and to join PETA's college activist network. Several of you asked about having someone from PETA speak on your campus. I am moving to the LA area and would be more than happy to speak at schools in the region, so please feel free to contact me directly about this. For help with PETA speakers in other areas email collegeaction (AT) peta-online (DOT) org . COWSARECOOL.COM For info on the problems with leather and alternatives check out www.CowsAreCool.com <http://www.cowsarecool.com/> . Among other things, you can get a free guide to leather alternatives at this site. BECOMING ACTIVE FOR ANIMALS If you want to do more for animals, check out http://www.animalactivist.com/act.html for tons of resources. You can order literature and videos and join PETA's activist network. INDIA/SOUTH ASIA RELATED ACTIVISM Animals in India especially need your help. To find out how you can help with PETA's campaigns to gain better treatment of cows, goats, and sheep in India contact Poorva Joshipura at poorvaj (AT) petauk (DOT) org . PETA's India office is also involved in a wide range of veggie-advocacy and other work for animals-find out more at www.PETAIndia.com <http://www.petaindia.com/> . One of the best things you can do is to help bring the message of compassion for animals into the Indian/South Asian community here in North America. For example, consider setting up a display at a temple, tabling at an Indian festival, having someone come speak in the community, etc.. Poorva, who has worked extensively in PETA's India, UK, and US-based offices, is your point person at PETA for help with these activities (poorvaj (AT) petauk (DOT) org ). Again, it was a pleasure to meet you all. Please don't hesitate to be in touch.
