Although it appears at first glance that when ekadashi falls on two days we fast on the second day, that need not be the case. When the ekadashi tithi is present at sunrise on a particular day, that day is called "ekadashi". However, if the tithi was not present two muhurtas before the sunrise on that day, then such a day is not a "suddha ekadashi", and thus not suitable for fasting according to the Gaudiya Vaishnava system, and the fast should be observed on the next day. In rare cases, an ekadashi tithi can span two sunrises and also the brahma muhurta of the first of the two days, in which case the first of the two days would be suitable for fasting.
