Srila Prabhupada NectarTo make an old man happy

 

In Indore, Srila Prabhupada accepted the invitation of

a wealthy gentleman related to the royal family. The

gentleman received Srila Prabhupada and his disciples

and Srila Prabhupada spoke about the importance of

Krsna Consciousness. Finally Srila Prabhupada showed

him his books and asked him to become a life member.

The gentleman countered, "I already have these books

in my own language. I don't need any more books."

Srila Prabhupada became very stern and replied, "I

have not come here to sell you some books. I have

come here begging at your doorstep." Taken aback, the

man immediately volunteered, " oh yes, I will become

your member Swamiji, I will be glad to become your

member."

We proceeded to the next room for lunch. Our host

seated Srila Prabhupada at the head of the long

banquet table and I took my place at Srila

Prabhupada's right. Then we all took prasadam.

I was used to strict brahmacari training and was

particularly reserved about eating sweets. Especially

being seated next to Srila Prabhupada. I tried to be

careful not to take more opulent preparations: I

didn't want Srila Prabhupada to think I was enjoying

sense gratification. The elderly father of the

gentleman who invited us came around the table and

repeatedly tried to give a second rasagulla, but each

time I staunchly refused. Prabhupada could see the

host's father was disappointed. Finally Srila

Prabhupada glanced lovingly at me and said, " You can

take a sweet to make an old man happy." And so I

accepted another sweet.
