Guest guest
Dear devotees PAMHO AGTSP I'm looking for notation of original tunes that were played by Srila Prabhupada himself. He often played harmonium and devotees recorded it and most of it in a good shape. However I'm looking for a chance to actually see recorded notations in Western or SaReGaMa notation system I do have Srila Prabhupadas mridanga beat in MIDI format and notation to it that he himself gave to devotees. But it is the melodic notations that I cannot find. If anyone knows were to find it or know players who are able to document it please contact me. Srila Prabhupada played a few very very nice songs like Sri Siksastakam and Gaura Arati by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura -- does anyone have notations for them? To give an example of melody that is somewhat lost -- Jaya Radha Madhava that Srila Prabhupada introduced himself to our tradition as a bhajan for Bhagavatam -- it is being played in so many ways different to Srila Prabhupadas original mood/melody. Does anyone know the original melody that Srila Prabhupada used? There is no recording of it, but what about the story when he SPECIFICALLY stopped on the way to Mayapur to sing this bhajan in Radha Madhava temple. Could this melody be recreated or does anyone have notations for this particular melody that Srila Prabhupada himself loved. Of course his kirtan melodies are quite different. He was particular in a way? There are some sa-re-ga-ma notation (1) for the main "happenings" tune given by Vyasaki Prabhu on his 80s videotape. Anything closer to the original? What about the really nice Govinda Jaya Jaya kirtan that Srila Prabhupada himself lead? I'm sure any form or transposition of MIDI (if someone has a midi compatible keyboard) (in MIDI1 or MIDI0 format) or even just a probhad in Sa Re Ga Ma style will be very nice to have and share. I know most of books by devotees in recent years, but maybe someone has scans of older books if there are notations of the particular melodies by our Founder Acarya. Thank you very much in advance. And promise to share it. Your servant Caitanya candrodaya dasa
Guest guest
Dear Caitanya candrodaya Prabhu Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! There are SO MANY recordings of Srila Prabhupada chanting Jaya Radha Madhava, dozens of them. The archives have many they have released on their more than 30 audio CDs of Prabhupada chanting. Prabhupada chants Jaya Radha Madhava on many of the classes on the ITV DVDs. There is well over 50 hours chanting practicly everything in his own tunes on the unedited bhajan tapes. The archives are very soon releasing another set of Prabhupada chanting CDs. So there is no problem to find out what tune Prahupada chanted Jaya Radha Madhava to or anything else. There are so many recordings of him chanting almost everythomg that he chanted on a regular basis. How it is that someone who is a member of ISKCON does not know that there are so many recordings of Srila Prabhupada chanting Jaya Radha Madhava simply amazes me. I am stunned to say the least! So if you want to learn the tunes simply get the recordings from Srila Prabhupada and hear. Hearing is the most powerful way of learning. Hope you are well and can get a full set of the music CD's or MP3s of Prabhupada chanting. All glories to your service. There are no notations of the original tunes. Nobody have documented it as far as I could find out. It is due to this fact that there are dozens of different tunes of JRM that are not what Srila Prabhupada sings himself. > > How it is that someone who is a member of ISKCON does not know that > there are so many recordings of Srila Prabhupada chanting Jaya Radha > Madhava simply amazes me. I am stunned to say the least! I'm simmilary stunned to find out that after all the years of Bhaktividanta Archives or ITV nobody has documented the notations of Srila Prabhupada orignal harmonium. I would however disagree with you that I don't know about Srila Prabhupada recordings as it is his recordings that were attached to my text and reconstructed notations (western or orignal) for HIS recordings that I'm looking for. I could sponsor the above research should ITV ever produce the above. > Hope you are well and can get a full set of the music CD's or MP3s of > Prabhupada chanting. I have all of them. I've added you as the reciver to the original post so that you will check out the files attached to it with :-) original recordings of Srila Prabhupada (tunes only). Do you have notations for these? I would really appreciate you could get me in touch with someone who has the notations for the above or can document it. Yours in the service to Srila Prabhupada Caitanya candrodaya das PS I have all ITV productions in M series that I've got from you sometime ago. M1,M2,M3 & M4... There are _no_ Prabhupada tunes on the above DVDs and even his beat is given differently to what he plays (and gives it himself on the tape). > > All glories to your service. > > Your servnat > > Madhudvisa dasa > > > Caitanya-candrodaya [Caitanya-candrodaya (AT) pamho (DOT) net] > Tuesday, January 25, 2005 9:27 AM > (All kinds of) Advertisements; (BBT) Bhaktivedanta Archives > Forum; Free Forum (Announcements); Prabhupada Disciples; Ranjit (das) > ACBSP (Archives); Balarama LOK > Re: Srila Prabhupada original tunes. > > > Dear devotees > > PAMHO AGTSP > > I'm looking for notation of original tunes that were played by Srila > Prabhupada himself. > > He often played harmonium and devotees recorded it and most of it in > a good shape. Guest guest
Dear Caitanya candrodaya Prabhu Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! It is true that many of the melodies that Srila Prabhupada originally chanted are somewhat lost in ISKCON. And it is true that Prabhupada, on some occasions, stopped kirtans which he did not approve of. We have a DVD kirtan where Prabhupada stops it because the kartal player is playing too fast. Prabhupada then proceeds to play the kartals himself perfectly to demonstrate how it should be done. He requested that the morning tune should be sung for the mangal-aroti kirtan, and he stopped kirtans or asked devotees to stop them on his behalf if they sung unbonafied songs. Hari Sauri Prabhu knows someting of these things. Prabhupada expressed his desire that the devotees also chant the tunes he chanted but at the same time he did not object to other tunes also. To the extent that he requested the Govinda Prayers produced by George Harrison be played in all the temples every morning at the Deity greating. This is not in his tune but a westernized tune with western instruments. So there is not a hard-and-fast rule that devotees can only chant the exact tunes that Srila Prabhuipada chanted, but obviously we are supposed to learn how to do things from the spiritual master. So the most important thing for us is chanting Hare Krishna and chanting the bhajans also is non-different from chanting Hare Krishna. So if we are followers of Srila Prabhupada it would be only natural that we would want to follow the way that he chanted Hare Krishna. None of Prabhupada's melodies are lost. They are all recorded. And any system of notation of music is just that. A way of recording the notes played in a musical piece. There are plenty of people out there who are muusically inclined who can write down the notes if they hear the music. I do not know if there are any devotees like that, but there are many karmis. So if you have the recording it is possible to produce th enotation of the music in any form. You just need to find someone who can do it. As far as I am aware there are of course mrdanga bols. That is a very established system. The harmonium, as I understand it, was introduced into India by the British and picked up by the Bengalie Vaisnavas for the bhajans. I have never heard of any system of notation used by the devotees and I have never seen a devotee playing harmonium from sheet music for example. As far as I know it has not been done. But there is no reason whatsoever that you could not transfer the Prabhupada tunes to sheet music and that would be a great way to preserve and perpetuate them and then anyone who could read music could play them on the harmonium. Of course there is a different style to the playing and the notation may have to be extended for that. I know one devotee who has learned very well to play the Prabhupada tunes very nicely by hearing them. So it is possible if you have the muscial ear to do that. And once you have worked out how to play them properly you can write down the musical notations. As far as I know so far eveyone done that before. It would be a great service to Srila Prabhupada and the Vaisnavas. All gloires to your service.
