But there is one day, Sept.29/2005 in > Mainz: breaking fast: 11.16-11.19. Is that one exception? > > Haribol! > Y.s. Nityananda-priya d.d. Yes. There are exceptions. For a particular place in any given year, out of 24 ekadasis there may be 4 or 5 exceptions. Calculating these exceptions requires more technical knowledge than just looking in a newspaper and getting out your electronic calculator. Before the days of computers, vaisnava communities engaged astrologers to make these calculations for everyone in the community to follow. The attitude expressed by the devotee you had spoken to, as mentioned in your previous text, was that we should not bother to follow these rules since it is too complicated to make the calculations. Certainly we can imagine circumstances under which we might not have access to the necessary information about what to do when. But that does not mean that should just throw the system away and do whatever we want. If the information is available, such as when we have a computer and the VCal program, then we should follow. If it is not available then we should follow the best we know how. If we try our best and make a mistake, the holy name will protect us. If we don't try at all then we are not following the instructions of guru, sadhu, and sastra, and this is an offense to the holy name.
