Could it be that the term 'mother' in modern English, thanks to Hollywood, has come to be associated with bad connotations? Personally, I can't bring myself to address anyone with a term that has been so completely butchered by modern American slang. I don't know if it is just due to English being my second language, but when I hear men address women by the English term Mother, to me it sounds plain stupid and stilted. I have no problem, however, with calling women mataji, and I have never met a woman who took exception to it either. ys, jdd
