Kusukratha departs this world

I was there when Kusukratha Prabhu had his first meeting with Srila

Prabhupada. It was in Buffalo N.Y. April, 1969. We were at a program at the

State Teachers College there which was well attended.

 

First there was kirtan, then Srila Prabhupada said the Jay Om prayers and

then he gave class. After class he asked for questions. A first time

attendee, Peter, ask a question. The question was asked in an irreverent

manor. He imitated the devotees bowing done and saying the pranam mantra in

a way to ridicule them, and asked what this was supposed to mean???

 

I was sitting in front of Peter and to his right, closer to Srila

Prabhupada. When Srila Prabhupada answered I felt a bolt of energy fly over

my left shoulder. I don't remember exactly what he said but I saw the effect

it had on Peter; it was way more then he had bargined for, he looked

stunned!

 

In the days following we used to see him sometimes standing across the

street from our temple, kind of like trying to figure out what it was that

hit him. Some devotees went across to talk to him. Soon after I was sent to

London by Srila Prabhupada so I didn't see him until he was Kusukratha some

years latter. I reminded him of that first encounter he had with Srila

Prabhupada and he smiled and said, yes Srila Prabhupada really gave me his

mercy.
