**SALUTE TO ROSA PARKS**

Learning Page honors the life of Rosa Parks, a seamstress who catalyzed

the civil rights movement by refusing to give up her bus seat to a white

man. She was jailed on Dec. 1, 1955, for violating Alabama’s bus

segregation law, which sparked a 381-day bus boycott by the African

American Community of Montgomery. The boycott was organized by then

little-known Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Eventually the U.S. Supreme

Court declared the law unconstitutional. The bus boycott marked the

start of the modern civil rights movement, and culminated in the 1964

federal Civil Rights Act banning racial discrimination in public

accommodations.

Rosa Parks passed away on Oct. 24, 2005, at the age of 92. She will be

remembered in American hearts and history for her courage to act on her

fierce conviction that all people deserve respect and equal treatment.

READING A-Z HELPS STUDENTS IN UGANDA**

Reading A-Z was contacted recently by a school headmistress in Kampala,

Uganda (East Africa), who runs a primary and secondary school for 360

students. Neither the schools nor the parents can afford to buy

textbooks for these students, whose reading skills are severely limited.

Reading A-Z responded to the request for help, and gleeful students in

the Primary 1 and 2 classes recently took home their first book, a

read-aloud called "Bears and Beans." Primary school headmistress Darline

Royer calculates that Reading A-Z books cost about 6 cents per student,

as opposed to $8 per book to obtain reading materials locally. With

monthly teacher salaries of $50-$90, books would be out of the question

without Reading A-Z.

"You can understand my excitement at having a source of educational

materials that will enhance our capability for teaching with greater

effectiveness," says Royer.
