Transcendental Diary Vol 1 January 13, 1976 - Calcutta Because it was Ekadasi we skipped breakfast and fasted until noon. But at lunchtime the devotees inadvertently broke the Ekadasi vow because the cook accidentally put peas into the vegetables. No one noticed until too late. Fortunately I arrived late for lunch because I had been massaging Srila Prabhupada. Just as I was about to eat, Jayapataka Maharaja shouted for me to stop. Although initially annoyed at being told not to eat, I was relieved when he pointed out the peas. Shamefaced, Tamal Krishna Maharaja went to Prabhupada to report what had happened and to find out what should be done. Srila Prabhupada told us we were all nonsense. He angrily rebuked us, "Now you have to fast for three days!" This shocked everyone. "Yes, that is the procedure," he confirmed. Seeing the stunned look on our faces he relented but said that we should observe Ekadasi for the rest of the day and then again tomorrow on Dvadasi. Guest guest
Dear Maharaj, Hari Sauri Prabhu,Kurma Prabhu, Please accept my humble obesiances. Thank you very much for your reply. Please find attached/below list of food that can be taken and not to taken from Ekadasi Mahatmya ( Translated by Bhumipati Dasa Edited by Pundarika Vidyanidhi Dasa ) which I come across. Here some of the listed vegetables (like tomatoes,cabbage...) which are not to be taken are taken by devotees and in temples too. Please give me final conclusion for the same. Thank you for your patience. Please forgive me for any offences. Your servant Kesavan. **************************************************************************** Taken from Ekadasi Mahatmya ( Translated by Bhumipati Dasa Edited by Pundarika Vidyanidhi Dasa ) Introduction page 9 and 10 Notes on Ekadasi Standard for Ekadasi break fasts. If you have observed a complete fast (without even water) you do not need to break it with grains, you can break it with caranamrita or fruit. But if you have observed Ekadasi by eating fruit and vegtables etc. then it should be broken the following day by taking grains at the right times. Mahadvadasi is observed like Ekadasi. Ekadasi The essence is to eat simply, once or twice, so that one can spend as much time as possible hearing, chanting and remembering Sri Sri Radha-Krsna. Never eat onions, garlic, carrots and read dahl, meat, fish or eggs or products thereof. Foods that are restricted during Ekadasi: - Tomatoes, eggplants, cauliflower, broccoli, bellpeppar. - Peas, chickpeas and all types of beans, including products made from beans (papadams, tofu, pempeh, grain beverages etc) - Indian vegtables: karela (bitter lemon),loki, parmal, toroi, kunli, drumsticks, okra(lady fingers),banana flower. _ All leafy vegatables: spinach, salads, cabbages and leafy herbs like parsley, curry leaves, neem leaves, etc. _Grains: millet, barley, farina, dalia, pasta, rice, corn, all types of dahl and all types of flour made from grains and beans (like rice flour, chickpea flour, urad dahl flour etc.) -Starches from corn or grains and products made from and mixed with these starches like baking soda, baking powder, certain soft drinks, custard, certain yogurts, puddings, cream cheese, sweets, candies and tapioca-balls. - Oils made from grains: corn oil, mustard oil, sesame oil etc and products fried in these oils: nuts, patato chips certain snack foods. - Honey: Do not use any cooking ingredients that might be mixed with grains,l such as ghee that has been used to fry puries or spices touched by hands dusted with capati flour. Spices that are used on Ekadasi are turmeric, black pepper, ginger and salt (rock salt) taken from a new or clean package. Foods that can be taken in Ekadasi. - All fruits (fresh and dried),all nuts and oils made from nuts. - Patatoes, pumpkin, cucumber, radish, squash (but no loki),green papaya, lemon, jackfruit, avocado, olives, coconut, buckwheat, all sugars. Guest guest
Pamho. AGTSP. I think Kavichandra Maharaja already answered this question. Did you carefully read what he wrote. Seems that you kind of ignored his answer, at least it appeared to me like this. As you posted again the same question not trying to understand what Kavichadra Maharaja wrote. How we will understand sastra if we dont have respect for comments of senior vaishnavas and dont try to understand them. I remmember 1998 there was same discussion. My GM commented that in sanskrit some root and carrot have same name, but the other root is not to be taken by devotees. If someone feels that SP standard is not enough for him and feels disturbed by this that devotees follow what SP introduced you can follow individually. But we should not think we are something special. Why to waste time with cooking and eating, simply chant Hare Krishna. This Ekadasi rules no one can learn from the book, it wont satisfy Krishna. One has to do it as service by instruction of a SP representative. Your servant Damana Krishna dasa
