Here is Lord Caitanya's own opinion: "Lord Caitanya (...) explained that

are called avaiŠava, and their company should be strictly avoided."

Advanced devotees may sometimes not follow rules and regulations, but

beginners and intermediate devotees have to follow. Bhagavad Gita, part of

the Mahabharata, is meant for ordinary devotees.
