Guest guest
"Other gurus became maintained dependents of rich disciples, like storytellers-cum-family-priests, in status a little above the domestic barber and washerman." Is three hyphens in one construction too many? Possible alternative: "Other gurus became maintained dependents of rich disciples, like storytellers cum family priests, in status a little above the domestic barber and washerman."
