Guest guest
Prabhupada Tells Short Stories "There is a Bengali verse, 'What is there that a goat will not eat and a madman will not say?'" Prabhupada then told a story to show how mad the modern civilization had become. The Indian government once wanted a painting of a war scene depicting a child being killed in front of its mother. Government workers asked many artists to paint pictures showing how the mother's face would look upon seeing her child killed. The winning painting showed the mother covering her eyes with her arm. Prabhupada explained that anyone who can bear to see a child being killed is an uncivilized, merciless demon. He said that the scientists are all madmen who will kill their own children and even eat the corpses. In this way he spoke of how demoniac the materialistic culture had become. Prabhupada once told a story about Prahlada Maharaja and his father, Hiranyakasipu. Because Prahlada was his son, Hiranyakasipu felt some affection for him. One day, Hiranyakasipu asked Prahlada, "My dear son, what have you learned from your teacher? Tell me the best things. Kindly let me know." Prahlada Maharaja answered, "I have learned sravanam kirtanam visnoh/ smaranam pada-sevanam/ arcanam vandanam dasyam/ sakhyam atma-nivedanam." Prabhupada then explained how we are hearing and chanting about so many things other than Visnu. Prabhupada said that in every country, millions of different types of magazines are being sold. He related how patients with diabetes have formed a society and have published a magazine. For two dollars a year, a person can receive information on how to protect himself from diabetes. Prabhupada said that in America, two dollars is nothing, yet the diabetic society is collecting millions of dollars with their magazine. That sort of hearing and chanting is not needed. Prabhupada said that because we are followers of Prahlada Maharaja, we are not interested in all these magazines. Tamala Krsna Goswami, journal; lecture in Los Angeles, May 27, 1972. Prabhupada criticized the fact that Westerners create magazines out of all kinds of nonsense philosophies, but the one magazine that Prabhupada advocated was Back to Godhead. In New Vrindaban in 1969, Srila Prabhupada said, "Produce a page only, Back to Godhead! That will bring revolution to the human society about understanding spiritual life. Don't produce this nonsense literature!"
