"Food System Insider" says that Meatrix has had 10 million hits. They invited comments about how to counter the message of the cruelty of meat eating. Interesting to know about their strategy. Here are some of the pro-meat suggestions. Notice that one frequently mentioned idea is to go right into the schools and preach pro-meat propaganda. ys hkdd ******************************** ** *Poll Comments :* * Create meaningful husbandry standards that allow animals to engage in their natural behaviors; to live with fresh air outside; to stop growth based drugs; to provide environments that are enriched for the specific species; and to house in numbers suitable for the species not for production. * 07/04/2006 * those who continue to miseducate consumeers about agriculture do so without real facts. they do an excellent job of appealing to emotions and have been unfortunately fairly successful doing so. this does not mean however that the agricultural industry should not repsond likewise. certainly presenting well though out factual evidence of producers interest in animal welfare and animal husbandry should be key. perhaps done in manner that emphasizes that many dairy and beef farmers raise animals for more than just a job...its a lifestyle and one that hasn't paid that well over the last 20 years. one would think they must enjoy some otehr aspect of their jobs * 07/04/2006 * Radio and TV ads would be better than a web site but we sould do both, and more. Let's get into the grade schools with more positive info about the necessity of red meat and milk in the diets of children. Let's enlist some of the students to carry the message to their peers. * 07/04/2006 * We can't continue to sit back and hope it goes away. They have too much money and support. We have to be proactive. * 07/04/2006 * Use solid facts but do not take a defensive posture. Create a story that is fun and pleasing and that reinforces the basic grassroots thoughts that people have or or want to have about farms and agriculture. After all no matter what the activiist say we do provide the food and fiber for the publics existance. * 07/04/2006 * We need to develop programs and go into school at grades 1 to 2, 5 to 6, 8 to 9 and 11 to 12 and show how we raise animals and why. * 07/04/2006 * DMI did create a consumer website - finally but definately lacks in creativity. We need a cartoon video too! * 07/04/2006 * Continue to take proactice initiatives and develop new ones to respond to the pressure points. We are not blameless but we must do something proactively. Work hard at openness and transparency. You can never stop these opinions and campaign. A key inititive should be to develop (train) and support professional behaviour by front line workers. Support pride in career. A website is a good idea but there are lots of things that can be done. * 07/04/2006 * There has to be a responsewith a thought process of showing that food prices would be very high along with shortages. Maybe even showing starving people in undevelop countries...Also again lets prove our track record of safty in our food chain. * 07/04/2006 * Respond with education programs targeted at kids that can be taught in schools. Like the importance of science based decisions. * 07/04/2006 * In spite of all the hype, humans will eat to live. It's difficult to believe that a Starbucks on every corner is necessarily a good thing anyway. Regardless, traditional agriculture should be telling the truth with actual farm video, not stooping to cartoon lies or half truths. * 07/04/2006 * In order to combat this type of hype, is a rebuttal and that the reality of the situation is that a consumer driven market and efficientcies are forcing producers into automated solutions. Let's show the real story and the damage that this hype causes. The alternative is higher prices, reliance on imports, a return to a past that cannot feed a nation, total collapse and failure of an industry. Is this what they want? * 07/04/2006
