All glories to Srila Prabhupada. It seems that this is connected with 50%/25%/25% rule of dividing ones savings. ========== Srila Rupa Gosvami was the younger brother of Sanatana Gosvami, and when he retired from service he brought with him two boat fulls of gold coins. This means that he brought with him some hundreds of thousands of rupees accumulated by the labor of his service. And before leaving home for Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he divided the wealth as follows: fifty percent for the service of the Lord and His devotees, twenty-five percent for relatives and twenty-five percent for his personal needs in case of emergency. In that way he set an example for all householders. >>> Ref. VedaBase => SB Introduction ========== Srila Prabhupada here says, that exemplary action for householders, upon leaving home for spiritual life, is to divide wealth accumulated by their labor according to 50/25/25% rule. He also said later on: ========= If the leaders and the rich men of the society spend fifty percent of their accumulated wealth mercifully for the misled mass of people and educate them in God consciousness, the knowledge of Bhagavatam, certainly the age of Kali will be defeated in its attempt to entrap the conditioned souls. >>> Ref. VedaBase => SB 1.17.24 ========= It seems, that householder must be saving throughout his life, accumulating wealth, but when he retires, he gives 25% to family, 25% he keeps for personal emergency, and 50% of savings goes to the service of the Lord and His devotees. ========= Just like Rupa Gosvami. He accumulated much wealth. He brought in a big boat, all gold coins. So... So he distributed fifty percent to the brahmana and Vaisnava and twenty-five percent he gave to the relatives, and twenty-five percent he kept for his personal emergency. This is example shown by Rupa Gosvami. >>> Ref.
