How about NO frozen (and microwaved) at all? Giving it up is probably even

healthier, for those who are into that kind of stuff. But what is more

important, Srila Prabhupada wanted that we give it up, and try to live pure

life!

===========

As he lay in the half-light, I mentioned that I had heard some of the

temples were using frozen foods for their Deity offerings.

Prabhupada shook his head and gave a sour look. "Tamasic food, tamasic

activities! It is going on simply by Krsna's mercy!"

Hamsaduta: No, he said, "I was able to get frozen vegetables from the south

of Russia. They freeze it and then they sell it," he said, "but it is very

expensive, very costly." He was getting frozen.

Prabhupada: That is also nasty. Frozen means nasty. I never take frozen. In

the beginning I thought, "Oh, it is very nice, you can get fresh vegetable."

But they are not at all fresh.

Hamsaduta: No.

Prabhupada: All rotten, rather the same vegetable, as we have got in India

practice, we dry it and keep it. That is tasteful. In season time -- suppose

this season there is huge quantity of vegetable -- so here the system is

they cut into pieces during the season and dry it in the sun and keep it.

And during out of season it is soaked in water, it revives the old taste,

then you can cook. (Hindi or Bengali)

Devotee (1): Tastes as though it is different. The fresh vegetable the taste

is very good.

Prabhupada: Fresh vegetable must be, but still there is some taste. But this

frozen it has no taste.

Prabhupada: So you will never discover the cure, and he will never come out.

Now somebody was saying that this freezing, the body within, they decompose.

The parts of the body are separate. That is... As we have... You take the

frozen vegetable. It is tasteless. It is decomposed.

For weeks Srila Prabhupada had been taking a commercially prepared food

supplement, Complan, but now he refused it. "What is the use of artificial

food," he said, "when there is natural? You Westerners like the taste of

canned, frozen, preserved, rotten food. You eat and then keep the leftovers

for seven months, and this you like.

===========

Prabhupada turned to Rama dasa. "This is very nice. Are the peas fresh?"

Rama dasa, embarrassed, explained that they were frozen. Prabhupada gave

Rama dasa an intense look. "Frozen peas should never be offered to Krsna."

Common forbidden foods include meat, fish, eggs, onions, mushrooms, garlic,

masur-dal (red lentils), burned rice, white eggplant, hemp (marijuana),

citron,* saps from trees (if not boiled first), buffalo- and goat-milk

products, and milk with salt in it.* Also, one should not offer canned or

frozen foods to the Deity, and it is best to avoid offering foods containing

unhealthy substances such as yeast and white sugar.
