Of course I maybe smug, not in tune to the realities of life, ignorant, or simply arrogant, but I do perceive the below answer as a completely practical reality for the modern age. 1. Ideal solution: work the oxen and protect cows, then drink milk from the cows. Unfortunately this solution is not available to most people right now. Solution 1 (a): the not ideal but practical solution. Protect the cows and oxen, and make plans to work the oxen when economic viability is attained. Drink the milk, and feel happy that cows and oxen are protected within a correctly managed business plan that ensures total economic viability. Fortunately this solution is available to some people right now, if only those who could set it in motion would see that a not-so-ideal solution is better than no solution. ANSWER: There appears to be a clear cut answer to this dilemma by making compromises according to time, place and circumstance.
