An article I submitted to Chakra about a week ago: Potent Spice Works To Block Growth Of Melanoma by Madhava Gosh Curcumin, the pungent yellow spice found in both turmeric and curry powders, blocks a key biological pathway needed for development of melanoma and other cancers, say researchers from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. The study, to be published in the August 15, 2005 issue of the journal Cancer, but available on line at 12:01 a.m. (EDT) on Monday, July 11, demonstrates how curcumin stops laboratory strains of melanoma from proliferating and pushes the cancer cells to commit suicide. It does this, researchers say, by shutting down nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB), a powerful protein known to promote an abnormal inflammatory response that leads to a variety of disorders, including arthritis and cancer. Similarly, if diagnosed with cancer, to simply add more turmeric to your existing diet and ignore other modalities of treatment would probably amount to a slow, painful, suicide. Turmeric helps your odds, but lots of other factors, like genetic predisposition or exposure to environmental toxins may be overpowering. Still, it is another of the cultural gifts Srila Prabhupada brought us when he taught his early disciples how to cook, and we should all be grateful. I think that this study shows that regular use of turmeric should be part of any overall preventative holistic health approach. TRANSLATION Putting on washed clothing, being always pure and being adorned with turmeric, sandalwood pulp and other auspicious items, before breakfast one should worship the cows, the brahmanas, the goddess of fortune and the Supreme Personality of Godhead. PURPORT If one is trained to honor and worship the cows and brahmanas, he is actually civilized. The worship of the Supreme Lord is recommended, and the Lord is very fond of the cows and brahmanas (namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca). In other words, a civilization in which there is no respect for the cows and brahmanas is condemned. One cannot become spiritually advanced without acquiring the brahminical qualifications and giving protection to cows Srimad Bhagvatam 6.18.52 So whole material world is nothing but tejo-vari-mrd-vinimayah, exchange of, elementary, this earth, water, and fire. The same principle here also: taste. Just like we cook the same oil, ghee, and salt and turmeric, but we prepare different preparations, hundred, two hundred preparation, simply by the process of mixing earth.
