Lord Paramasiva came to the rescue of the Devas and Asuras by consuming the poison and became Neelakanta (Blue-necked) The saints who were present there wondered. "How could Lord Paramasiva consume the poison and survive unaffected?" Some saints felt that Lord Paramasiva had acquired this power because of his control over his sense organs. He is called the conqueror of Cupid. He burnt the body of cupid into ashes when cupid aimed his arrows at Lord Paramasiva, forcing Siva to look at Parvathi, with passion while she was doing service to him during his penance. They hailed Lord Paramasiva. "Rightly, you are the conqueror of poison because you are the only person who could conquer Manmadha." For a moment, Paramasiva was flattered. He felt that he was `growing- oversize' before the Saints. He prayed to Lord Narayana to bring the truth to the world. In his opinion, his conquering Manmadha and surviving the poison – both were possible because of the grace of Lord Narayana. Lord Narayana decided to answer the prayers of his dearest devotee Lord Paramasiva. The drama unfolded when nectar emanated from the milky ocean. The thirty-three crores of Devas and sixty-six crores of Asuras, who were orderly till then, forgot that discipline is essential. Both wanted to grab the pot of nectar carried by Dhanvantari. In the process, the Asuras overpowered the Devas and snatched away the pot. Helpless Devas, took refuge at the feet of Lord Narayana. The merciful Lord Vishnu took the form of a beautiful damsel, popularly known as "Mohini" and went to the Asuras. Enchanted by her beauty, the Asuras were ready to do whatever Mohini would desire them to do. "I will distribute this nectar to you but the most effective concentrated portion will be in the bottom of the container. Please bear with me till I distribute the diluted top layer to the Devas and come to you to distribute the concentrated portion." So saying, she made Devas and Asuras sit in rows and began distributing the nectar to Devas. Because of the elixir, Devas became strong. By the time the Asuras could realize that Mohini was none other than Lord Vishnu, who had again shown his favour to Devas, it was too late. The Devas had become powerful. They conquered the Asuras and possessed the Amritha handed over to them by Mohini. When the whole scene was being enacted, Lord Paramasiva was not there as he had retired to Kailash with Parvati for he needed rest after consuming the poison. News reached him through Narada that Lord Narayana took the form of a beautiful damsel to ensure Asuras did not get the nectar and only Devas got it. Lord Paramasiva with Parvati then went to Vaikuntaloka of Lord Vishnu. Lord Narayana welcomed Paramasiva with his beatifying smile. "What can I do for you?" He asked Paramasiva. "I am informed by Narada that you took incarnation as Mohini; I missed sight of it. I would be grateful if for my sake, you again take the Mohini Rupa and give me Darshan." "No", says Lord Narayana. "That was only to confuse the Asuras. Why should you be interested in seeing that Rupa?" "No, My Lord, I should not be deprived of this Darshan", insisted Paramasiva. Then, Lord Narayana appeared before him in the form of Mohini, with Parvati watching the entire scene. Lord Paramasiva could not control his passion to possess Mohini, though he surely knew that she was Lord Vishnu made up as a damsel. It is described in some puranas that Lord Iyappa was the outcome of this love affair of Lord Paramasiva with Lord Hari in the form of Mohini. At the end Paramasiva with his head down was standing before Lord Narayana who was smiling at him. Parvati smiled and said, "I can never visualize you, the conqueror of cupid, falling prey to your sense organs, that too, knowing pretty well that Mohini was an artificial beauty." Lord Narayana consoled Paramasiva and Parvati and said, "This scene is only in reponse to the internal desire of Lord Paramasiva who had been praying to me to show the world that his conquering the sense organs and reducing cupid to carbon was because of my sankalpa-grace. Today he has fallen prey to passion again because of my Sankalpa- grace!" "I am grateful to you, Lod Vishnu!" says Paramasiva. "You are the ultimate controller of all the sense organs. You are therefore called Hrisheekesha, which means the controller of sense organs. You derive joy (harsha) by protecting your devotees and enjoy comforts (soukya) and you achieve all these with effortless rulership (aishwarya). You are therefore aptly called Hrisheekesha. You are the controller of the sense organs of all inclusing super human beings like Brahma and me," so saying Paramasiva returned to Kailash with Parvati. Dear readers, please appreciate that our sense organs cannot be under our control without the grace of His blessings – the ruler of organs, the Hrisheekesha. Let us pray "Om Hrisheekeshaya Namaha" Source: VAK, Oct 04.
