Misfortune comes but not alone, a proverb fitting well to J&K State.

On one hand militancy is causing insecurity, fear and reign of

terror when earth quake of 8 th October added fuel to the fire.

Natures furry in the form of Earth quake which occurred on 8 th

October 2005 at 9 a.m. caused a havoc on both sides of LOC, with an

intensity of 7.6 Richter scale. On Indian side of LOC about 1500

people died, thousand houses collapsed and some partially damaged,

hundred and thousand people rendered home-less and are facing cold

winter. Can death be so cruel, so fast and so devastating? This was

a rare and devastating natural calamity. Sewa Bharti J&K response to

the alarming situation was spontaneous and immediate. A team of its

worker was deputed immediately to the most affected areas of Kashmir

division and Poonch in Jammu division. The survey was conducted and

needs thoroughly discussed. The urgent need was shelter (tentage),

warm clothes, food hygiene and blankets. Relief Activities Conducted

Immediately In Kashmir Sewa Bharti under the banner of "Shezar" and

"Rashtrya Muslim Movement" mustered nearly 40 cadre to provide

medicine, clothes, food, milk and cereals to the indoor patients in

Srinagar Medical Hospital, brought from the INFORMATION BROCHURE For

private circulation only SEWA INTERNATIONAL SI-17/2006 for private

circulation only April 14, 2006 P.O.B. No. 5755, S.R.T. Nagar, New

Delhi   110 055 Tel.: 0091-11-23684445 Jammu and Kashmir Earth

Quake: Relief and Rehabilitation Work effected areas. Our volunteers

were instrumental to work hand-in-glove with military personnel's in

the relief work. A team of Qualified Doctors/Staff with an Ambulance

containing medicine worth Rs.50,000 visited twice in the affected

areas in Kashmir covering nearly 37 villages in Titwal, Tandghar in

Uri sector and Kupwara sector, where free medicines and consultation

was given to the sufferers. In Poonch sector, in Jammu division Sewa

Bharti mustered a large number of its volunteers who went in the

remotest corner, where even the Government agencies could not reach

till then and distributed nearly 1500 blankets, utensils clothes etc

among the victims of quake. A great zeal and sportsman-ship was seen

among the cadre. Constant efforts of all. Social Voluntary

organizations and Govt. help has added in the normalization of the

situation and proving the needful. Cash to 95 families has also been

distributed to get their damaged houses repaired. Rehabilitation

Programs In spite of limited resources, the zeal, enthusiasm,

dedication and pains-taking-sprit of our volunteers has encouraged

us to add more leaves in our rehabilitation work. Hence Sewa Bharti

J&K has planned to construct a community center cum rescue center,

School and one dispensary at 3 places 1
