On one hand militancy is causing insecurity, fear and reign of terror when earth quake of 8 th October added fuel to the fire. Natures furry in the form of Earth quake which occurred on 8 th October 2005 at 9 a.m. caused a havoc on both sides of LOC, with an intensity of 7.6 Richter scale. On Indian side of LOC about 1500 people died, thousand houses collapsed and some partially damaged, hundred and thousand people rendered home-less and are facing cold winter. Can death be so cruel, so fast and so devastating? This was a rare and devastating natural calamity. Sewa Bharti J&K response to the alarming situation was spontaneous and immediate. A team of its worker was deputed immediately to the most affected areas of Kashmir division and Poonch in Jammu division. The survey was conducted and needs thoroughly discussed. The urgent need was shelter (tentage), warm clothes, food hygiene and blankets. Relief Activities Conducted Immediately In Kashmir Sewa Bharti under the banner of "Shezar" and "Rashtrya Muslim Movement" mustered nearly 40 cadre to provide medicine, clothes, food, milk and cereals to the indoor patients in Srinagar Medical Hospital, brought from the INFORMATION BROCHURE For private circulation only SEWA INTERNATIONAL SI-17/2006 for private circulation only April 14, 2006 P.O.B. Our volunteers were instrumental to work hand-in-glove with military personnel's in the relief work. A team of Qualified Doctors/Staff with an Ambulance containing medicine worth Rs.50,000 visited twice in the affected areas in Kashmir covering nearly 37 villages in Titwal, Tandghar in Uri sector and Kupwara sector, where free medicines and consultation was given to the sufferers. In Poonch sector, in Jammu division Sewa Bharti mustered a large number of its volunteers who went in the remotest corner, where even the Government agencies could not reach till then and distributed nearly 1500 blankets, utensils clothes etc among the victims of quake. A great zeal and sportsman-ship was seen among the cadre. Constant efforts of all. Social Voluntary organizations and Govt. help has added in the normalization of the situation and proving the needful. Cash to 95 families has also been distributed to get their damaged houses repaired. Rehabilitation Programs In spite of limited resources, the zeal, enthusiasm, dedication and pains-taking-sprit of our volunteers has encouraged us to add more leaves in our rehabilitation work.
