Guest guest
OM NAMAH SIVAYA Amarnath, talking of sprituality and diet reminded me of Micheal Ableman. he interviewed my wife and i for a book he was writing about organic farming in America. he talked about the importance of supporting local farmers thru farmers markets and about the importance of the distance food travels from picked to plate. it's about 1300 miles on average. food loses much of its energy from time and travel. and the expense of shipping greatly raises price of fruits and vegetables. he also is spearheading a big push for urban farming to feed our growing population. here in Chicago there are vacant lots in the projects being used for vegetables. if anyone is interested here is his website. http://www.fieldsofplenty.com JAI MA Ammachi, "amarnath" <anatol_zinc> wrote: > > see http://www.treeoflife.nu/whyveganism.html for full article; > some excerpts below : > > There was a time when dairy was considered "rasa" or the subtle > energy of richness, sweetness, and delight. Guest guest
namasivaya, eric, good point ! i even heard of at least one prison project where prisoners grow vegetables and sell to local restaurants. there are so many ways of doing good; may all of us gain the strenght, alertness, wisdom and most of all the FEARLESSNESS of AMMA'S PURE LOVE to do good ! amma bless, amarnath Ammachi, "ecjensen_us" <ecjensen_us> wrote: > > OM NAMAH SIVAYA > > Amarnath, talking of sprituality and diet reminded me of Micheal > Ableman. he interviewed my wife and i for a book he was writing > about organic farming in America. he talked about the importance of > supporting local farmers thru farmers markets and about the > importance of the distance food travels from picked to plate. it's > about 1300 miles on average. food loses much of its energy from time > and travel. and the expense of shipping greatly raises price of > fruits and vegetables. he also is spearheading a big push for urban > farming to feed our growing population. here in Chicago there are > vacant lots in the projects being used for vegetables. if anyone is > interested here is his website. http://www.fieldsofplenty.com > > JAI MA > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yes, to say nothing of the amount of fossil fuels it takes to drive crops across the country or to fly imported fruits from South America, etc. And there is also the enviromental toll of monoculture farming, which depletes the soil and causes chemicals and pesticides used in farming those veggies to run into lakes and rivers, the drinking water of so many creatures. Local, seasonal and organic is definately the best way to go, for health of ourselves and health of the earth. I would love to see more local, organic produce used on tour with Amma. I wonder if it's possible to make an arrangement with a local CSA or something to get lots of good produce cheaply? Then eating with Amma would also be a seva! Jane Goodall, who presented Amma witht the Ghandi-King award, has a new book out called "Harvest for Hope," which is really excellent and clearly presents all of the related and interconnected issues around our diet and the impact it has on ourselves and our world. It's not overly preachy, but is clear and concise, and so well written that I finished it in a day! love, Prajna "Children, all of spirituality is contained in that one word: Awareness." - Amma Love cheap thrills? Guest guest
A couple of years ago, Amma got extremely upset when some devotees were buying organic fruit that was more expensive than the otherwise available "conventional" fruit for use either at the ashram or on one of the tour stops. One of our leaders in NYC was specifically told not to buy organic fruit for any of Amma's programs if it was more costly. Anyway, it's a great idea to support organic and/or local farmers in the context of Amma's tour, if it can be done in a way that is cheap or at least not more expensive than usual. I just wanted to let you know what happened before though, because she was really clear.
