Guest guest
Hi - I'm new to the list so please bear with me if I ask any questions that may seem juvenile or are somehow inappropriate. I'm just curious about Vedic Astrology. I've been trying to understand how Vedic Astrology works and when I visited India some years back I was simply dismissed saying that us "americanized-indians" wouldn't get it. How exactly would I go about getting a "chart" reading done? And to this "chart", if I were born in India but raised in America, wouldn't the stars/planets that affect me change since I've moved to a different hemisphere? How is this accounted for when people do "chart" readings. Is the position of the planets when I was born factored in or when I was born and were I was born? If I was born under a given hemisphere where the stars/planets are seen one way, how do you take into account where you were raised and how the star/planet alignment is from that second hemisphere? Am I confused about how these charts are done? What would be some suggested readings to learn more about this? Does this group have website? What are good online resources to learn more about this? Thanks inadvance, -=lata=-
Guest guest
Hi! Let me take a shot at your questions. I am also a new comer to Astrology (Vedic or Western). > > I'm new to the list so please bear with me if I ask > any questions that may seem juvenile or are somehow inappropriate. I'm just curious about Vedic Astrology. Nothing to worry. Curiosity...etc., are not applicable in here!! > I've been trying to understand how Vedic Astrology > works and when I visited India some years back I was simply dismissed saying that us "americanized-indians" wouldn't get it. > How exactly would I go about getting a "chart" > reading done? All that you need is accurate time of your birth, date of your birth and place of your birth. There are many superly qualified on this list to do analysis of your chart(as I said before I am too inexperienced to venture it!) >And to this "chart", if I were born in India but >raised in America, wouldn't the stars/planets that >affect me change since I've moved to a different >hemisphere? This position 'reveals' the course of one's entire life(and beyond as well as before),from birth to death. The subsequent journey of planets (called transits) work as trigger points for the events of life. > What would be some suggested readings to learn more > about this? Does this group have website? What are good online resources to learn more about this? Good starting point is Das Goravani's lessons on his web site. (GJ stands for Goravani Jyitishya and I preume you have visited his site.) My pleasure writing this bit so that a new comer is not disappointed. Vishy ===== Viswanadham (Vishy)H.S, MBA(Electronic Business), City University Business School, London. Guest guest
An excellent reference material for understanding is written by William R.Levacy...called, "beneath a Vedic Shy" and in the end of the book is a cd from Das Goravani ...it is a book complete in itself to assist a newcomer. And then there is James Braha...with several titles..."Ancient Hindu Ast5rology for the Modern Western Astrologer", "How to be a Great Astrologer with planetary aspects explained", also by Braha, "How to Predict Your Future; Secrets of Eastern and Western Astrology", by Braha and "Aspects in Vedic Astrology" by Pandit Gopesh Kumar Ojha. These titles sum it all up for you to understand the vedic way. Guest guest
Lata, It is never easy to ask questions particularly where a possibility of people at different levels reacting unpredictably to your questions exists. This list, for the most part, is quite helpful as you must have already recognized. My responses appear below as "MK: ..." >Lata Narumanchi <lnarumanchi >gjlist >gjlist >[gjlist] INTRO: new to list/new to vedic astrology >Wed, 06 Sep 2000 02:16:45 -0500 > >Hi - > >I'm new to the list so please bear with me if I ask any questions that >may seem juvenile or are somehow inappropriate. I'm just curious about >Vedic Astrology. > >I've been trying to understand how Vedic Astrology works and when I >visited India some years back I was simply dismissed saying that us >"americanized-indians" wouldn't get it. > MK: This is certainly not the [stereo]typical Indian response :-) Some of it can be due to the individual's perception of your seriousness about astrology, as well. Best remedy in such cases is to persevere. One good thing about India is that there are >1 billion Indians, so statistically, there are more jyotishis there than anywhere else and with the population density and smaller landmass, your chances of finding someone who does not harbor the [stereo]typical position higher. >How exactly would I go about getting a "chart" reading done? And to >this "chart", if I were born in India but raised in America, wouldn't >the stars/planets that affect me change since I've moved to a different >hemisphere? How is this accounted for when people do "chart" readings. >Is the position of the planets when I was born factored in or when I was >born and were I was born? If I was born under a given hemisphere where >the stars/planets are seen one way, how do you take into account where >you were raised and how the star/planet alignment is from that second >hemisphere? Am I confused about how these charts are done? > MK: Stars and planets being far away from the earth, do not change their tune depending on where on earth one is born. If you are referring to the different zodiacs used by different schools of astrologers, that is of course a different matter. For babies born at the same instant in Delhi and Detroit what varies is the ascendant or orienting point in the chart. That one tiny factor can lead to a significant difference, though :-) If one were to have complete mastery over all facets of astrology, it would perhaps be possible to identify factors in the chart (reliably) of the environment. As it stands, most astrologers would find it difficult to identify to near 100% successfully something so basically binary as the gender of the nativity, just by looking at the chart. Identifying race, nationality, other similar obviously significant and significantly obvious factors also fall in the same situation as gender. However, this does not necessarily mean that astrology cannot be of benefit to individuals. There are some famous astrologers who claim to (or for whom the chelaas claim) give uncanny details. These jyotishis are also spiritually advanced and some of their success can be attributed to spiritually-aided astrological readings. But that is not what we are talking about here (technical astrology). >What would be some suggested readings to learn more about this? Does >this group have website? What are good online resources to learn more >about this? > MK: Ask five people (from different lists, of course ;-) and you may get at least four different recommendations. Westerners (including those of Indian origin) generally find it easier to follow books by western authors, at least in the beginning. So, Frawley (Vamadeva Sastri), Braha, Dreyer, Hart etc., sound appealing. Indians generally prefer Raman, Rao, Charak, Bepin Behari (he is in a class by himself). It is not necessarily a 'nationalistic' leaning that we are seeing in these recommendation but more an expression of idiomatic identification and familiarity. The interesting thing about many of these books is that they always touch a chord (hence they are popular I suppose) within the reader and are very convincing. This should always be followed by a study of real charts and perhaps lots of 'cold' readings (with only birthchart and not with the person sitting across from you; this is where internet comes really handy) and you should ask the person for feedback and engage in a series of readings rather than a one time reading so that you can test the rules and fine-tune them as you get feed back. If you make a mistake, what do you stand to lose? While it is of some use to acquire fundamentals from books and software, you would need to think about and mull over the basic terms, quantities and constructs until it becomes second nature. Perhaps at this time you may not be interested in going this far and are more interested in knowing and learning about your own chart. Detailed readings if done well can actually be quite a useful learning tool. If you need some practice material, I will be happy to provide you with such. Write if you are interested and when you are ready to spend some time sincerely on astrology. Guest guest
Lataji Namskar! www.goravani.com is the URL, where you will find the Jyitshya lessons from Das Goravani. Pretty useful if yoou are uninitiated. I have noted your birth details and should post you some reading as soon as I get free from my dessertation project. (I repeat I am a learner, though.) Is the TOB of 8pm exact? Regarding your question: > so when these readings are done, are these transits > or trigger points > taken into account? would one need to know where you > grew up and where > you are living now to get a better reading? Yes. Trigger points are considered for making predictions. It is better to leave it to the person making chart reading to decide about what details are needed. After you read the basic lessons, you may raise the question again.. I am sure you will be raising this question again and again because it deals with some of the finer points of Astrology!!
