Guest guest
spyrikal [spyrikal] Wednesday, October 18, 2000 12:52 AM gjlist [gjlist] Hi, I was watching Sabrina..... .....the Teenage Witch on television...if you've never heard of it, it's a sitcom of a teenager who's a witch having teenage experiences...and anyways, it was an episode where her classmates were on a weekend field trip and the theme of the weekend was to act as the townspeople of Salem back during the day when they used to hang witches, burn them at the stake as history goes....anyways, there was this big lesson to be learned about who you are and who other people think you are...obviously in Sabrina's case her dilema revolved around being stereotyped as an ugly, evil, good for nothing witch who no doubt should be disrespected and punished, even killed.....as the story goes, as part of the playing out history, she was accused of being a witch...she denied it, and there was a mock trial held for her......she thought the accusations over and she felt uneasy and she fought it within herself....she wanted to justify herself...she did not like hearing the falseness in their words and the harshness of their actions against her....she knew who she was and she knew their thoughts were deluded.........she wanted to prove them wrong but she tossed and turned over whether it was worth it or not.........she finally made her decision and at the trial confessed to being a witch...needless to say, as her plea of guilt was most unexpected and not what they wanted to hear, no one believed her and she was let off the hook...free to go, free to be a person she was not....free to be a person she was told she was....and free to live a life that was not her own.....hmm, so it seems in her case she could not win either way. Anyways, it's just a silly television show, but this got me thinking....I wonder how different a person would be if he or she hadn't been made aware of characteristics of themselves that someone told them they had.....and also, this reminds me of an article I read where there was a study done...I guess a sort of placebo effect type of study, where people were given descriptions of their sun sign, and those told it was their very own unique characteristics were more influenced and felt more confident the personality traits mentioned were correct, as compared to the group told it was a general description for many many individuals....this second group was unsure. Hmm, may I ask what your thoughts are on this....this whole flexability thing and adapting to who you're told you are? Just curious, Angie gjlist-
