Guest guest
Hi all! My letter to Mark re. Local time was NOT to be critical, but to clarify for the future. Those who have never calculated charts by hand may not know these things: 1. there are Time Zones in the world. The zonal time is the difference between the time at 0° (Geernwich Mean Time = GMT = UT = Universal Time) and the time at particular longitudes. These are usually chosen at 15° intervals, for that represents 1 hour of time difference. Examples: New York, NY, 74 W 23 has Time Zone 5 hours, taking the time at 75 degrees West longitude. (75 divided by 15 = 5). Depending on where in NY city, Local Time will be up to 2 minutes less or more than the zonal time EST. Chicago, Ill is about 87 W has the zonal time CST, 6 hours = time at 90°W. actual Local Time in chicago is about 12 minutes less. The Zonal Time is converted to GMT (UT) to get the positions of the planets; but the chart´s ascendant is found from the LOCAL TIME! So GJ etc. CONVERT TOB given in EST, CST etc. to the Local Time at the place. So if a TOB is given with Local Time, also Time zone mentioned, it is confusing! Has the correction for longitude been made or not? In india it can lead to big mistakes. The difference between the standard time as read off the clock and the Local time of place of birth can be 30 minutes! If the correction has been made and time given is actually Local Time, GJ will deduct or add 30 minutes and lagna will be off by about 7 degrees! So please avoid the designation "local Time" and say "Standard Time" - or specifically state "Local Time for the POB", which is a bit of a nuisance for entering data! regards Mani
