Guest guest
Das: Thanks for the factoid on popularity. Interesting stuff. If it is an accurate measure of jyotish's profile, then I'd be surprised, but not shocked. My sense is it is growing pretty fast but since it was near zero, the growth rate can be very high and it still barely makes a dent in the overall scheme of things. Here's another little observation from my world: I just joined "Astrology Toronto", a local group of merlin-types, and enquired if there was anybody doing vedic. "Nope" was the answer. So it's still pretty marginal. I don't think I'll be hanging around there too much. It kind of reminds me of the relative popularity of astrology books. Rick Houck says that he didn't make much money on his self-published books -- no big publisher would bother with them, they sell so little. Lots of Sun sign stuff is sold, but nothing too sophisticated. OTOH, De Fouw did manage to get his first book published through Penguin. Don't know how well it sold but it may be worth noting that his second book was published by Weiser, a smaller astrology press. There's always going to be a smaller market for the good stuff, jyotish included. I think the masses aren't up to it. They want it simple. That's why sun sign stuff is popular. In India, people only know kuja dosha and sade sadi, if that. To my mind, that's not much more sophisticated or accurate than sun sign astrology.
