Dear Mani,

with regard to Neil: If he is born in Germany in Essen, the zone cannot

be -1 but +1. with a birthtime of 20:25 that should give him a Taurus Lagna

and not Scorpio. pls advise.

Dear Sanny,

Glad you ask for clarification, because it is a thing I learned the "hard" way.

The Time Zone method is stupid, although based on logic, which could have been

used to suit normal human thinking, but was not.

To start with, we have the expression Universal Time" = UT. Absurd, because it

can apply only to the earth.. This is the standard clock time at Greenwich,

England, 0° longitude. But there are two other times: the Baycentric time (TDB)

and the Terrestrial Dynamic Time (TDT). The UT is used for calculating the

Ascendant and house cusps, but TDT is needed for calculating the positions of

the planets. The TDT is itself a derivative of the TDB! Don´t give up, but read

further!

The time zones are based on UT, formerly called GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). All

"standard" times are calculated for particular longitudes at the rate of i hour

per 15 degrees. These longitudes are sort of middle longitudes for areas, each

country decides on which to choose for itself. This is for convenience. Western

Europe takes 15° East as the standard and Spain, although mostly west of

Greenwich follows this Central European Time (CET). The United Kingdom takes 0°

as the standard - although mostly west of Greenwich - and is 1 hour ahead of

CET. India too has a standard that is not a longitude in the middle of the

country but more east. Actually most of the countries using CET lie west of 15°.

The next expression is "Local Time" LT. or LMT. This is the real time as

compared with GMT or UT for the exact longitude of the place in question. IT

SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED WITH THE STANDARD TIME OF THE COUNTRY WHERE THE PLACE

EXISTS! I was born at 08:00 am Indian Standard Time. The planets are calculated

for 02:30 GMT (UT) corrected to TDT (a very small correction of seconds). Lagna

and angles according to LMT, which would be 07:38, my place of birth being

4 °30´ west of 82°30`, the Standard longitude for India.

The time zone question:

Every 15° east of Greenwich adds 1 hour to GMT/UT. Every 15° west reduces the

same way. So Germany is UT plus 1 hour. New York is roughly 75° west of

Greenwich, follows EST and is 5 hours less than UT, GMT - 5 hours.

Here comes the absurdity: the time zones are not designated by their direct

relkationship to UT BUT BY WHAT YOU HAVE TO ADD MATHEMATICALLY TO GET UT! So to

get UT from EST you have to ADD 5 hours and EST is +5 hours. But to convert CET

to UT you have to subtract 1 hour (add a minus!) so CET is zone -1 hour!

This is how all astro programmes work.

Dear Sanny, sorry if I have bored you with this elaborate reply. But I have

written it for all list nmembers who may have similar problems with TOBs. It is

actually better to state the time in UT only, but those who work with programmes

may not be able to enter the data. Actually all programmes do accept UT, but it

takes a bit of experimenting to find out how! The straitforward entry is often

rejected or converted to weird solutions because they work with an atlas etc.

and insist on what they assume to be right! Entering UT often results in the

programme taking it as the standard time of the country!

regards

Mani

PS: I am surprised that hardly anyone has attempted my test case! Why bother

with a carnivore?.....
