Guest guest
Hi Resaerch friends, After checking a lot of charts in my own family etc. I find the TOBs as given by sunrise BS! IST is often mentioned, but it does not tally with actual sunrise. The TOB by clock is re-calculated for a hypothetical sunrise time! Newspaper times of sunrise, usually visual and not astrological, for a place where the paper is published; or a panchang for some particular place; or 06:00 hrs; or what you will! The real local sunrise is rarely calculated or taken into account. So any elaborate chart readings for sunrise charts is WASTE OF TIME! You don´t have TOB but TO -BS! regards Mani

The mess is in the recording of TOBs. Usually only a rasi and anavamsa diagram is given, with no degrees. Occasionally a standard time is also noted down, probably later. The ayanamsa used is never mentioned and before say 1960 Lahiri was not common. Raman more, but every panchang has its own! When you calculate the chart, all sorts of discrepancies are found. Not to speak of the people not having clocks or clocks that were running right, or radios. As to sunrise, most of the time it was arbitrarily assumed. I am trying to get toether the data for my family and am faced with all sorts of problems! regards Mani
Guest guest
Dear Mani, Finding accurate TOB is something I'd like to do myself. My mother was nicknamed "Cappy" so I wonder whether that might indicate she had Capricorn rising...(sigh!) Keep looking for meaningful events and characteristics. When the slokas begin to fit, you will have at least a prospective chart..and during the search for a fitting chart, an education! Guest guest
Dear Subra, This is the formula for calculation of Sunrise and Sunset Sunrise = 6 Hours + Equation of Time - C (Ascensional Difference) - R (Refraction Correction) Sunset = 18 Hours + Equation of Time + C ( Ascensional Difference ) + R Refraction Correction ) With these formulae you can calculate the Sunrise and Sunset of any latitude on earth. I don´t know slokas, but this is what happened to me: I was christened Srinivasa Nataraj. My father gave all his sons names of Vishnu, Nataraj was a concession to my nakshatra Ardra. His father was called Subramanyan and he detested his father! But a yogi visited us and told my dad it was an insult to the ancestors if he did not call any son by his father´s name. So they started calling me Subramanyan, shortened to Mani. funny thing: the nadis called me Srinivasa-Subramanyan! I knew my TOB was around 08:00 am, but owing to uncertainty regardin sunrise time etc - uncertainty re accuracy of horoskop and knowledge of the person who cast it - I was always trying to find a correct TOB. I went to an esoterical fair and hoped to find a medium who cpould perhaps give info. I had hardly entered the hall, whe a guy waved to me and said, "This will interest you!" It was a stand from the Theosophical society - of which my uncle Sriram was president for over 30 years! HeThe guy gave me a thin book, called Alcyone. Didn´t mean a thing to me. Opened it at random and found as first word "Manu". The Manu association had been plaguing me for years and I got interested, bought the book. It was the medial info re. a person who called himself Alcyone and his various incarnations. But what interested me was to find out what Alcyone was and found it was the chief star of the Pleiades, KRITTIKA! Lord Subramanya was suckled by the Krittika sisters! So I checked and found 08:00 am was exactly the time Alcyone was rising! At about this time I was strongly drawn to Sai Baba and Ammachi. Cheking their charts: Sai Baba has Alcyone exactly setting, Ammachi´s moon is on Alcyone. So I decided that the time was my TOB. Inder Jit confirmed this by prasna. Alcyone is the star around which the universe is supposed to revolve, according to some ancient traditions. At least by western sidereal methods this time fits. Jyothish is uncertain, owing to ayanamsa problems. I find Fagan good, others do not. Since I work only with angles, it makes little difference. regards Mani
Guest guest
Dear Mani, I enjoyed reading how you found your TOB. I thought of how the Pleiades are also called "The Seven Sisters" and how they look like a diamond-shaped kite in the starry heavens....and then I thought of your sister in law who was such a wonderful example of this constellation's nurturing. To me you do have the correct Time Of Birth! Then I began to think about Ammachi again (many thanks to Visvanathan for telling us about her summertime tour in USA, which I found details for on the Web--she'll be in the Washington DC area in early July), and it is all very special to me. Her website (for listmembers who'd like to see it) is http://www.ammachi.org Thank you for sharing your interesting stories with us, Mani! Best wishes, Carol
