Guest guest
oops....here's the email on the study with the astrologer's name further down in the email. GJ doesn't allow forwards...sowwy Dear List members, Of late, I have committed to devoting more time to astrology, its practice, teaching, and research. In this post I want to propose a research venture with the collaboration of all interested astrologers in this list (and others you may know). Here's the sketch of my proposal: I would like to analyze data from lots of charts to isolate the power of various Jyotish chart factors, both "fundamental" and "new". In order to do this, I am going to write some programs based on data mining techniques from AI/statistics. I want to collaborate with astrologers in this forum (and others) who are willing to share their data with me for the sake of analysis. The following are the potential benefits of this venture: - We develop a better, empirical understanding of classical principles as applied in the current social context - We discover new correlations and inter-factor dependences that would be otherwise impossible to discover manually - We establish a database of "like charts" that we can refer to when we analyze any particular clienr, or deliver workshops, or whatever. I think there's a lot of benefit for all of us, with no fear of stepping on each other's toes. Please understand that we are not trying to indulge in some futile exercise to prove or disprove astrology. We are going to really go after some hard data without the tedium and limitation of manual analysis to deliver much richer information. Apart from the raw data, I would need constant input from all the participants, using your experience and skills to arrive at relative importance of various factors. For backrgound, I have a Ph.D. in Computer Science. My last job was with DoubleClick Inc where I worked directly for the co-founder and CTO, leading a team of scientists to build new products. A major focus of these products was optimization based on the kind of data analysis I am talking about. And for the longest time (> 10 years) I have been teaching undergraduate Computer Science at Rutgers University, NJ. While I am willing to do all the software on my own, it would be great if I could find another programmer who can help me out. Please let me what you think. If you don't think this is an appropriate thing to discuss on this list, please email me privately at sesh_v - I will be glad to build a separate mailing list and work with the participants to chart a plan of action.
