Forgive me Raghu, the need to unburden is strong!

 

Leon Tolstoy once said that as long as there are slaughterhouses there will be

war!

A noble but naive sentiment.

 

Adolf Hitler was a great friend of the Wagner family and was a strict

vegetarian. Winifred Wagner, a very cultured and real lavender and lace lady,

knew Hitler well. Even after the end of the war, she was absolutely convinced

that Hitler was a true gentleman, a philanthropist. She maintained at first that

the murder of the Jews was a lie, but faced with evidence, she was convinced

that Hitler was unaware of it all, people like Göring were responsible. She

mentioned - in an interview - how frequently Hitler quarrelled with Göring about

the latter´s love of hunting. Hitler as animal-lover, could not pardon killing

of animals for sport and fun!

 

My father was, of course, a strict vegetarian, as we all were. He was devout and

prayed 2 hours every day. We had a garden and the flowers were used for his

puja. One day a herd of stray goats got into the garden and started eating up

the plants and flowers. My father saw this and in a wild rage chased them off,

beating them bloody with his walking stick. I ran to my aunt - his younger

sister - begging her to go out and stop this merciless act.The plants were

brahman, the goats were brahman, who were we to say how brahman should feed

himself? The idol does not taste the flowers showered upon it, but the goat does

and delights in it!... My aunt ran out, but the "carnage" was over, the last

poor critter had left... but my aunt could not resist telling my father what I

had said. That was the end. The relationship of father and son was broken, he

provided for me but avoided me for months, all communication was restricted to

absolute needs - and we parted gradually, without ever re-establishing

cordiality. It was a tragedy for me, but I had won a battle against hypocrisy,

or at least lack of insight.

 

There is a community in india that lives by lending money to the poor, at the

MODEST interest rate of ONLY 18%! The members of this community are usually

strict vegetarians.

 

The equation vegetarian = humanitarian or spiritually advanced is just not true.

 

Before we stop the killing of animals, we should stop "cannibalism" in its

various aspects. If you do not respect your own kind, you will not truly respect

a worm! One can love animals owing to their naturalness, but be disgusted with

human beings for departure from Nature. Animals are dictated by a higher power,

but Man has some freedom. So one has to accept his varying behaviour.

 

True herbivores have multiple stomachs, hooves or feet (hands) with hardly any

separation between fingers or toes, and no canine teeth. Man does not fit in, is

in the process of becoming a selective herbivore: can ultimately live from the

fruits of plants but not on plants themselves.

 

TERROR:

There is terror in our society, which we breed or tolerate. Yesterday a boy in

the village came to me. He has an inflatable boat and loves to sail on the lake

with it. A school comrade (identity uncertain) has slashed his boat - owing to

some childish argument! WHY??? We are unable to channelize the exhuberance of

youth into productive paths, do really nothing to stop youth criminality.

 

We are smug and send blankets and condensed milk to victims of war. But what do

we do to eliminate the war? No nation intervenes till its own commercial

interests are in danger. The taliban has oppressed the women of Afghanistan for

years, but who went to help the women?

 

With what right does the US or its allies attack Afghanistan? Why was it not the

United Nations that declared war on terrorism? The US - and Russia - have always

tried to manipulate the UN instead of putting themselves under its discipline!

 

I honestly wish that this "war on terrorism" will NOT be "won" by the US!

 

I wish that finally ALL NATIONS will be forced to cooperate, that the UN will

take up the war against injustice, poverty and terrorism. The awarding of the

Nobel prize to the UN and Annan is a gesture, only a recognition of weak effort,

not real success! A true world police requires that the US puts itself

completely under the UN, and acts under the instructions of the UN.

Hi Mani,

 

I absolutely agree: integrity of one person can be seen only in a complexity of

everyday living: not by isolated facts: vegetarianism, love for animals

(possibly not for people)..

 

And yes, there's a terror in our society which we ether breed or tolerate...

 

Thank you for pointing out those not very pleasant, but real things that a

complex enigma, called man has to deal with for a long time.
