Chara and other karakas

Dear Cynthia and Nicholas,

Regarding Chara karakas: They represent the fulfillment of desire, as well

as specific purposes, through the people in one's life. Different planets

from one chart to the next, of course, are going to represent such persons,

and that is the beauty of the Chara karaka scheme. Chara relates to

Brahma, or the principle of creation, and thus has relevance to cardinal

signs astrologically. The self-determination to fulfill desire comes

through the cardinal signs, especially Libra/7th house, which is the 2nd

generation of the Kama (desire) triangle. We fulfill desire through other

persons (7th house, Libra), and thus Rahu (representing compulsive desire)

has a position within the Chara karaka scheme. If you review the history

of Rahu, it was his desire to enjoy Amrita (immortality), licentiously,

that got him into trouble, and thus forever there will be the experience of

desire, and its frustration, if one wants to fulfill it within the realm of

Maya (illusion). Anyway, Rahu is the full-fledged desire principle, yet

that which attempts fulfillment through temporary (illusory) matter.

Since Parasara named 8 Chara karakas, Rahu thus has an important place

within the scheme. For Rahu's degrees, however, count from the end of his

sign, not the beginning, as with other planets. Ketu does not have a place

within this scheme, because Ketu is the Moksakaraka, and thus being desire

less, has no place within the Chara scheme.

Natural karakas (Naiskargika karakas), include Ketu, as all purposes up to

liberation (Moksha), are indicated by the natural karakas.

Sthira karakas, the third and final group, include the 5 planets + 2

luminaries, yet exclude Rahu and Ketu. This is because the Sthira karakas

are used for longevity determination, and since Rahu and Ketu have no

bodies, they are not included within the scheme of Sthira karakas. The

Sthira karakas relate to the death of parents (Sun and Moon), brothers

(Mars), grandfather (Jupiter), spouse (Venus), etc.

Best wishes,

Robert

Dear Robert

The chara karaka represents the ability to fulfil desire through the person

Natural karakas are used for general purposes

Are sthira karakas the same as functional karakas ? In any case they are

used for longevity determination

Is this the correct distinction between the 3 types of karakas ?

My previous understanding of the distinctione between functional and natural

karakas was that natural karakas are used for internal considerations and

functional karakas deal more with external considerations .So that if Mars

is functionally benefic and strong in the 2nd house then it is good for

wealth but not good for a peaceful family life .

Dear Robert

Thank you for the information. I'm trying to digest....I'm a little slow.

Does it follow that if a person has a retrograde planet that it would

likewise be read backwards aka

a retrograde Jupiter at 1 degree might be the attmakara?

Am I missing something really obvious???

You're welcome, my pleasure to share.

One might think that, but no, the counting from 30 d. for Chara karakas is

unique to Rahu. All other planets, even if retrograde, should be counted

from the beginning of signs as usual.

Best wishes,

Robert
