Guest guest
Hi All, I'm new to this list and Jyotish. I've studied Western astrology, modern and traditional (medieval and ancient) for many years, and recently I've discovered Jyotish. I think Jyotish is great and to be honest, no matter how much I've searched in Western texts, I'm beginning to think that Jyotish is better than anything I've encountered so far, at least for me. Looking at ancient Hellenistic astrology texts, I can see many similarities between Jyotish and ancient Western systems, and this is an area that interests me a lot. At the moment, I'm trying to locate some good Jyotish reference texts. I've only read Komilla Sutton's The Essentials of Vedic Astrology, and I think it's a very good book. I'm looking for some basic reference texts, such as the Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, the Kalprakshika etc. Does anyone know if they are available online at all? And also, what modern Jyotish texts would you recommend to a student of Jyotish? Thank you, Dimitris

Guest guest
Namaste Dimitris, I recommend David Frawley(Vamadeva Shastri). He is in depth, profound and highly respected. He can get you acquainted with jyotish and the whole vedic culture. Contemporary scholar is a lot more helpful and easy to make transition with, than beginning with ancient texts. His American printed Astrology of the Seers is a good one to start with and will give you a strong foundation. William Levacy's book Beneath the Veic Sky is good and comes with Das Goravani's program demo cd. Dr.Charak's Elements of Vedic Astrology is good. James Braha's Ancient Hindu Astrology for Modern Western Astrologer or The Art and Practice of Ancient Hindu Astrology, and Light on Life by Hart Defow, and Dr. Raman's books are next. I have a book store and carry all those books. If you want classic texts like Brihat Parashra Hora Shastra, i have them too.
