Dear Prasad Ji,

Thanks a lot for explaining the symbolism in shiv

linga in such straight and simple way. The combination of feminine and

masculine energies can be seen in many cultures too like the ying-yang

theory in chinese mythology. In fact this could imply that equal

participation of both genders is necessary to create a balanced and

progressive world.

Dear Ashutosh: I am joining this discussion for two reasons: 1) one

is that I

gather you are Cancer lagna (as I am) and I'm trying to glean

everthing from

the discussion about Rahu in Pisces and Ketu in Virgo (H-9 and H-3);

and

also my views in general are that I am profoundly spiritual but do

not follow

any formal religious path, although I have followed many paths of

devotion in

my 30-year spiritual practice that originate from religions; 2)

second is that I

had posted a poem to the list for Mahashivaratri, entitled

'Shivaling,' which I'm

adding again to this email with my author's note about the sirgun and

nirgun

aspects of Shiva as follows:

"The poem celebrates both the nirgun and sirgun aspects of Shiva;

thus its

title 'Shivaling,' which is mystically both the Himalayan mountain

where Shiva

dwells (sirgun) and the shivalingam representing the cosmic principle

of the

tantric union of opposites (nirgun). The speaker in the poem is

symbolically

cleansed of past karmas, and is thus reborn, or rebirthed, after her

immersion

in the Ganga and thereby, like the "river" will "surely

one day...merge in the

Sea" (of Self-realization). The imagery of being immersed in the

Ganga is

similar to the embryonic state of pre-birth, except now after her

ritual

purification, she emerges not in the world of samsara but is prepared

to tread

the path of Self-realization, the reason the poem ends with her

meeting the

sannyasis after her pilgrimage to the temple by the Ganges."

The poem was was written 31 March 2000 in commemoration of a trip to

India

in 1988 that included a pilgrimage to Gangotri, the glacial origin of

the holy

Ganges—the setting for the poem and published March 8, 2005 on

Shivaratri

as "Reminiscence of Shiva" by editor Suhamoy Das in About

Shivaling

On the dark Moon, I dream

placing a pineapple on the

altar of Shiva and lighting a candle

to burn in the darkness of the Moon.

So I may dwell with the Beloved

and, one day, dance, foot lifted,

pointed to the sky in the new cycle of becoming

birthing the Dream into being.

In that stillness, as the spring snow

drenched the Earth,

I remembered offering myself at the temple

as I lay under the pure Ganga stream,

in the distance, Shivaling,

where the yogi dreams

above the shrill clamor

of humanity in the valley below.

The cool crystal water washes

the ash on my forehead,

and the ashes of one dear

arise in my mind's eye,

As I rise clear-eyed from the current

rushing with the force

of the river's journey

homeward to the Sea.

And I bow to the deathless Lord

whose form I see, motionless

in the still, white glacier

beyond the swift, foam-capped waters,

moving surely, one day to merge in the Sea.

Halfway down the mountain, I paused at the bank

of the strong, surging waters, in a flower garden

smiling at two gracious monks robed in ocre.

Dear Janna,

I have an innate affinity with people born in cancer

lagna. Maybe thats because we like to ponder a lot. Your poem has a

dreamlike quality and it seems you have spent a long time in Gangotri. Keep

writing. You are literally overflowing with creativity.

Send me your birth details too.

Regards,

Ashutosh.

Dear Ashutosh:

I would also like to know where you are and your birth details. I f

you posted

them to the list, I missed it (the posts are now so long that I am

unable to read

them to the end-the cursur stops). I connected with your posts

because for

many years I questioned if I was a "theist" or an "existentialist." I

knew I was

not atheist because I believed in what Dawn wrote about

"consciousness,"

i.e., what the Buddhist calls "emptiness" (of names and forms) but

what the

Vedantin calls "fullness" (the bliss of consciousness after the

negation of

names and forms), which are the same teaching. I also wrote a poem

about

that, which I include below (and a book that is about the "dark moon

bride

wedded to the god of fire-Shiva, the same theme of union with the

absolute

through dissolution of the "I"). So I came to an acceptance of what

others call

"God" through my understanding of the Buddhist-Vedic teachings and

felt

then fine that I was "outside" concensus reality about "God."

My birth details are:

July 22, 1946 6:56 AM Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

I do think I'm "in for it " with Saturn return summer 2005 and Saturn

crossing

ascendant summer 2006, which is another reason I was trying to follow

your

process—to find if there were any other transits in common beside

H-3, H-9,

Ketu-Rahu.

But thank you for your reply.

PS: Details of my book are on my website:

ALL IS FULL

That truth is the negation of false

That Light is the negation of dark,

Not the opposite of false or dark.

That all is only the negation

of the pairs of opposites.

That the Buddha's emptiness

Is the Vedantin's fullness.

That we are only mentations

In the mind of Brahman

Is the crown of the eggplant!

A revelation like a burning flame

In the embers of the dying vritti.

That is such a relief,

Now to live it!

Ashutosh Ji asked : "What does shiv linga signify?"

In Sanskrit Lingam means form, symptom or symbolic representation. Atma

Lingam means form/symbol of the soul. Manushya Lingam means form/symbol of

the human.

In GJ when you use glyphs different planets are shown or represented in

different forms. Example Moon is symboliccally represented by a crescent,

Sun with a circle with a dot in the centre. However we all know actual

Sun's form is different, and the Sun God's form is also different and not

just a circle with a dot.

Similaly what we see Shiva Lingam in the temples etc,. is a form or

symbolic representation of Lord Shiva, which is non different from that

Lord Shiva and we all respect and worship.

Shiva is the name of the person, referred to the one of the Devas. Shiva

Lingam is a form of Lord Shiva. Shiva and his energy do not stay separate,

so in the siva linga his wife, our mother Parvati is also there.

Lord Siva is considered the father of this universe, and material nature is

considered the mother. The father and mother are known as Lord Siva and

goddess Durga. Together, Lord Siva's genitals and the vagina of goddess

Durga are worshiped as the Siva-linga. This is the origin of the material

creation.

Om Namah Sivaya. Vaisnavanaam yatha Shambhu.

Yours Sincerely,

YB Prasad.

Dear Janna,

Re: Shiv Linga

I do think I'm "in for it " with Saturn return summer 2005 and Saturn

crossing

ascendant summer 2006, which is another reason I was trying to follow

your

process-to find if there were any other transits in common beside

H-3, H-9,

Ketu-Rahu.

But thank you for your reply.

Janna

PS: Details of my book are on my website:

http://seven_directions.tripod.com/

ALL IS FULL

That truth is the negation of false

That Light is the negation of dark,

Not the opposite of false or dark.

That all is only the negation

of the pairs of opposites.

That the Buddha's emptiness

Is the Vedantin's fullness.

That we are only mentations

In the mind of Brahman

Is the crown of the eggplant!

A revelation like a burning flame

In the embers of the dying vritti.

That is such a relief,

Now to live it!
