Hi Christian,

Thanks for writing, and I am glad that what I wrote about Bipolar

Manic-Depression was of some interest. Re: your question, evidently,

there is some overlap between soft bipolar and borderline

personality disorder, but also, some controversy exists about

collapsing one into the other. I do not know enough about this to

have an opinion, though I have read that some experts question

whether borderline personality disorder even exists as a separate

syndrome...then we can get into the whole discussion about the

problem of using any labels to define psychiatric disorders.

You might want to look at the following website to get some further

information on this topic:

Re: your friend's chart, the sandhi/gandanta Moon can be an

indication of emotional instability, especially as it is placed in a

Maraka house and is a Maraka lord. It receives several malefic

(rasi) aspects-one from Saturn and the Nodes and it also aspects the

1st house. When there is affliction to the constellation of Cancer

as well as the Moon, as in this case, depression and emotional

suffering may result.

Look at that 6th lord Mercury in Mula in the 12th house-that could

indicate a highly sensitive and potentially troubled, passionate

mind, one that feels a lot of psychic pain, especially as it is

aspected by Mars (agitation and violence) and also in Papakatari

Yoga with the Sun (which can be quarrelsome) and Ketu (Pitta like

Mars)...it appears there exists some "heat" that can agitate her

mind.

Look at the karyeshas of passion (5th, 7th and 12th lords)...the 5th

lord Venus is in a dusthana and conjoined Mercury in Mula, and the

7th lord Moon is sandhi in the 7th. This latter placement can

indicate one with relationship problems. Also note the graha yuddha

with Mercury and Venus in the 12th, and Mercury may be winning

because, though Venus is north in celestial longitude, Mercury is

north in latitude and declination, and Mercury has advantages due to

its speed. Though Venus may be vanquished in the planetary war, it

is not such a big deal when a war exists between these two graha.

they move so fast. Anyway, we might read this as the lord of the

5th, Venus, suffers due to this war, and the 5th house being

occupied by Rahu adds some confluence, and this can reflect some

disturbance to the mind and particularly, it could indicate poor

judgment?

For psychopathology, I always look to afflictions to Jupiter, as

Jupiter indicates discernment, maturity and wisdom, and can magnify

or exaggerate matters that it influences in the chart. Often we will

see Jupiter afflictions in Bipolar Manic-Depression, with

indications of hubris and a personality at times lacking in impulse

control.

In this chart, Jupiter is 12th lord and is strong in an angle.. but

we have to ask, strong for what? It is in the Nakshatra Bharani and

is a temporal malefic as lord of the 3rd house of egoism and the

12th house of passion and secret pleasures. Astrologer

Robert Schmidt says that the Twelfth House to the Hellenistic era

astrologers represented a "personal tutelary deity that was trying

to lead one astray, which is why the Twelfth House is called

the 'Evil Spirit' in Western astrology." Jupiter as 12th lord in

Bharani can reflect one who is embroiled in the world of extreme

desires and passions...

"Dwelling mentally on the objects of sense leads to attachment to

them. From attachment arises desire and from desire, anger. From

anger springs forth lack of discrimination which leads to loss of

memory. From loss of memory ensues the destruction of intelligence,

and the destruction of intelligence results in decay."—GITA II, 62,

63

Some other shadow issues of this Jupiter may relate to narcissism

and a restless or irritable nature. Jupiter stands out because it is

AK and also because she was born in Jupiter's Mahadasa, so this

graha colored her first impressions of the world. There may have

even been some kind of early aberrant behavior or suffering for the

mother that has affected her negatively.

Saturn weakness and afflictions (debilitated or in the sign of an

enemy, poorly aspected, placed in a challenging bhava, etc.), can

indicate being out of touch with reality. I would say that this is

NOT the case for her, however, as Saturn is Swa in the neutral 2nd

house. However, I feel there is perhaps some difficulty caused by

the 6/8 relationship between Saturn and the Moon.

She should see an Ayurvedic physician to get some herbs to balance

and possibly cool her mind, and she should devote herself to service

and charity and she should meditate....but then this is true for all

of us, isn't it?

There are many other factors to examine in judging charts for

psychopathology, and certainly, there are other, more senior

astrologers, who will have more success than I do with this. I do

not have the time to go into all her vargas with this analysis.

Nonetheless, since we are all learning, I will post a separate list

of some other indications I have discovered that you may wish to

examine for this chart and others.

Best,

Juliana
