Guest guest
Namaste. Here's my attempt (apologies for the delay -- workload is the culprit) Data: Asc Aslesha-3 Su Anuradha-1 Mo Uttarashadha-3 Ma Purvaphalguni-1 Me Anuradha-3 JuR Rohini-2 Ve Purvashadha-3 Sa Aslesha-2 Ra Mula-4 Ke Ardra-2 +-------+-------+-------+-------+ | | |JuR |Ke | | | | | | | | | | | +-------+-------+-------+-------+ | | |Asc | | | | Sa | | | | | +-------+ RASI +-------+ |Mo | |Ma | | | | | | | | | +-------+-------+-------+-------+ |Ra |Su | | | | Ve | Me | | | | | | | | +-------+-------+-------+-------+ -- Q1) Calculate navamsa. A2) Please excuse me if the following explanation is too mathematical -- I am using the theory of congruences from number theory. I have tried to simplify it as much as possible. The zodiac (Bha-chakra) has 360 degrees. There are several ways it can be divided. One of them is the Rasi chakra which divides it into 12 equal parts. It is also devided into 27 parts where each part is called a Nakshatra (constellation). We can think of them as different units (e.g., inches vs. centimeters). Now, if we want to convert from one set of units to another set of units, we need to know how they are related. One way to accomplish this is to divide the zodiac into another set of units which can form the basis for both Rasis and Nakshatras. One way is as follows: 12 Rasis = 27 Nakshatras = "x" Amsas -- (Eq-1) In the above equation, I am using the term Amsa to mean part or division. We can choose a suitable value for "x", so that our conversion becomes an easy task. What would be a suitable value for "x"? A natural choice is the least common multiple (lcm) of 12 and 27 as both numbers will divide it then. lcm(12, 27) = 108 = "x" -- (Eq-2) >From (Eq-1) and (Eq-2) we have: 12 Rasis = 27 Nakshatras = 108 Amsas -- (Eq-3) >From (Eq-3), 1 Rasi = 9 Amsas -- (Eq-4) 1 Nakshatra = 4 Amsas -- (Eq-5) In case of Nakshatras the Amsas or divisions are called Paadas (quarters), as they are four in number. So each Nakshatra has 4 paadas. In case of Rasis the divisions are called navamsas, as they are 9 in number (Nava is 9 in Sanskrit). >From (Eq-4) and (Eq-5), we see that 1 Rasi is equivalent to 2 Nakshatras and 1 Paada, or 2.25 Nakshatras. So 4 Rasis is equal to (4 * 2.25 = 9) 9 Nakshatras. (I am using * to denote the multiplication operator). This is why the 9 Nakshatras from Ashwini to Aslesha span the 4 rasis from Ar-Cn, the next set of 9 Nakshatras from Makha to Jyeshtha span the 4 rasis Le-Sc and the last set of 9 Nakshatras Mula to Ravati span the 4 signs Sg-Pi. Now coming to Navamsa divisions, the 108 Amsas of (Eq-3) are mapped to 12 Rasis such that the first Amsa is mapped to Ar, second to Ta and so on in a periodic fashion (i.e., the 13th Amsa in the zodiac is mapped to Ar, 14th Amsa to Ta and so on). Let's number the amsas as z1, z2..z108. Thus in Rasi chakra: Amsas of the form 12n+1 (0<=n<=8) map to Ar (1st Rasi) in Navamsa chakra, i.e.,z1,z13,z25... Amsas of the form 12n+2 (0<=n<=8) map to Ta (2nd Rasi) in Navamsa chakra, i.e.,z2,z14,z26... Amsas of the form 12n+k (0<=n<=8, 1<=k<=12) map to the k-th rasi in Navamsa chakra. Also, z1..z4 map to Aswini z5..z8 map to Bharani ... z105..z108 map to Revati Again in Rasi, z1..z9 map to Ar z10..z18 map to Ta ... z100..z108 map to Pi. This implies that: the 1st pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+1 (0<=m<=8) maps to Ar the 2nd pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+1 (0<=m<=8) maps to Ta the 3rd pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+1 (0<=m<=8) maps to Ge the 4th pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+1 (0<=m<=8) maps to Cn the 1st pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+2 (0<=m<=8) maps to Le the 2nd pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+2 (0<=m<=8) maps to Vi the 3rd pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+2 (0<=m<=8) maps to Li the 4th pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+2 (0<=m<=8) maps to Sc the 1st pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+3 (0<=m<=8) maps to Sg the 2nd pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+3 (0<=m<=8) maps to Cp the 3rd pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+3 (0<=m<=8) maps to Aq the 4th pada of Nakshatras of the form 3m+3 (0<=m<=8) maps to Pi Nakshatras of the form 3m+1 are: Ashwini, Rohini, Punarvasu, Makha, Hasta, Visakha, Mula, Sravana, Purvabhardra. Nakshatras of the form 3m+2 are: Bharani, Mrigasira, Pushyami, Purvaphalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purvashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttarabhardra. Nakshatras of the form 3m+3 are: Krittika, Ardra, Aslesha, Uttaraphalguni, Swati, Jyeshtha, Uttarashadha, Satabhisa, Revati. -- Q3) Which padas give vargottama status? A3) A planet is said to be in Vargottama if it occupies the same sign in both Rasi chart and Navamsa chart. Planet in N-th sign can be in one of 9*(N-1)+1 to 9*(N-1)+9 amsas. So we need to solve the equation, 9*(N-1)+k := N mod 12 , 1<=k<=9 -- (Eq-6) which means that the amsa number when divided by 12 should leave remainder N, which is rasi number. [Notation: a := b mod c means a leaves a remainder of b when divided by c. It is read as a is "congruent to" b "modulo" c] Let's solve for Ar. N = 1 for Ar. 9*(1-1)+k := 1 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 => k := 1 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 => k =1. => The first Navamsa of Ar is vargottama. For Ta, N=2 9*(2-1)+k := 2 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 9+k := 2 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 adding 3 to both sides, we get k := 5 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 k = 5. => The 5th Navamsa of Ta is vargottama. For Ge, N=3 9*(3-1)+k := 3 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 18+k := 3 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 adding 6 to both sides, we get k := 9 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 k = 9. => The 9th Navamsa of Ge is vargottama. For Cn, N=4 9*(4-1)+k := 4 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 27+k := 4 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 subtracting 3 from both sides, we get k := 1 mod 12, 1<=k<=9 => k=1. So the 1st navamsa of Cn is vargottama. Is there a pattern here? Let's see. Say N = 3m+1, 0<=m<=3 corresponding to Ar,Cn,Li,Cp 9*(3m+1-1)+k := 3m+1 mod 12 27m+k := 3m+1 mod 12 k := 1 mod 12 => k=1. So any sign of the form 3m+1 (1,4,7,10)has its first navamsa as vargottama. These are Ar,Cn,Li,Cp. When N=3m+2, we have 9*(3m+2-1)+k := 3m+2 mod 12 27m+9+k := 3m+2 mod 12 k := 5 mod 12 So any sign of the form 3m+2 (2,5,8,11) has its fifth navamsa as vargottama. These are Ta,Le,Sc,Aq. When N=3m, we have 9*(3m-1)+k := 3m mod 12 27m-9+k := 3m mod 12 k := 9 mod 12 So any sign of the form 3m (3,6,9,12) has its ninth navamsa as vargottama. These are Ge,Vi,Sg,Pi. Thus Aswini-1, Rohini-2, Punarvasu-3, Punarvasu-4 are vargottama in Ar,Ta,Ge,Cn respectively. Purvaphalguni-1, Chitra-2, Chitra-3, Anuradha-4 are vargottama in Le,Vi,Li,Sc respectively. Uttarashadha-1, Uttarashadha-2, Satabhisa-3, Revati-4 are vargottama in Sg,Cp,Aq,Pi respectively. -- A related problem: (for extra credit :-) Sometimes a planet is uccha in Rasi and neecha in Navamsa or vice versa. Let's see how that comes about: -- Theorem-1: First we will show that if two planets are 180 degrees apart in Rasi, they will be in opposition in Navamsa. Proof: A planet in the k-th navamsa of Nth sign in Rasi occupies the sign [9*(N-1)+k] mod 12 in Navamsa. The planet which opposes this in Rasi would be in [9*(N+6-1)+k mod 12 in Navamsa. Now [9*(N+6-1)+k mod 12] = [54 + 9*(N-1)+k] mod 12 = 54 mod 12 + [9*(N-1)+k] mod 12 = 6 + [9*(N-1)+k] mod 12 QED. -- Now we'll see how a planet can be uccha in Rasi and neecha in Navamsa or vice versa. Since uccha and neecha rasis are always opposite from (Eq-6) we get: 9*(N-1)+k := N+6 mod 12 -- (Eq-7) Say Sun is uccha. So N=1. (Eq-7) becomes k := 7 mod 12 => k = 7 So if Sun is in the 7th navamsa of Ar, he will be neecha in Navamsa chakra. From Theorem-1, since Saturn's exaltation/debilitation signs are opposite to those of Sun, if Saturn is exalted in Rasi he will be debilitated in Navamsa. It also follows that if Sun is neecha in the 7th navamsa of Li, he will be exalted in Navamsa. Let's try for Moon. Moon in exalted in Ta (2). 9*(2-1)+k := 2+6 mod 12 9+k := 8 mod 12 k := 11 mod 12 which is unsatisfiable as 1<=k<=9 Thus if Moon is exalted in Rasi, he cannot be debilated in Navamsa and vice versa. For Mars, exaltation is Cp(10) 9*(10-1)+k := 10+6 mod 12 81+k := 4 mod 12 k := 7 mod 12 k = 7 Mars in 7th navamsa of Cp in Rasi will be debilitated in Navamsa. Similar result holds for Jupiter whose exaltation/debilitation signs are opposite to those of Mars. For Me, exaltation sign is Vi(6) 9*(6-1)+k := 6+6 mod 12 45+k := 12 mod 12 k := 3 mod 12 => k = 3 Me in 3rd navamsa of Vi in Rasi will be debilitated in Navamsa chakra. Similarly we can deduce for Venus. Puzzle: How come Moon is the only planet which can be exalted in rasi but cannot be debilitated in navamsa at the same time? I don't know the answer. I'd be grateful for any corrections. regards, Krishna.
