These are my answers to the questions on Lesson 1. I will be very grateful of

your advice and suggestions. Astrology is a subject very new to me and I am

answering based on the readings I am doing , to which I am devoting time and

interest.

Q1 Explain...The earth is a globe which rotates around its own axis in 24 hours.

It rotates around the sun in one year or 365.2422 days. The imaginary line

around the earth is the Equator; it marks the exact middle between the Northern

and Southern hemispheres. The yearly motion of the sun around the earth

determines the changes of the seasons. The path of the sun is called the

ecliptic.

The sun reaches the southeast point of its trajectory in the Winter Solstice

(Dec.23) and from there begins traveling north, thus its inclination gradually

decreases. It crosses the Equator twice a year, first at the time of the

Vernal Equinoxe (March 21), when on the whole earth the duration of the day and

night are equal. The sun touches the Tropic of Cancer during the Summer

Solstice, and then for the second time touches the Equator in the Autumn

Equinoxe.

Q2 There are some days....When the sun is near the horizon, its light enters

the atmosphere at a low angle. The atmosphere bends the light around the curve

of the earth, so that an observer on earth can actually see light from slightly

bellow a straight line to the horizon. Sunset and Sunrise occur when the top of

the sun appears above or dissapears bellow the horizon. At that point the

center of the sun is just under a degree below the horizon and most of that

extra bit of day is due to the bending of the sun's rays by the atmosphere.

Q3 Parasara mentions...The grahas means rotating bodies and the word is applied

to the nine heavenly bodies (planets) the sun, the moon, the five planets, and

the moon nodes Rahu( North node ) and Ketthu ( South node). The sun is the

lord of all the planets. Planets are the center point of vedic astrology. tHey

are located in the sky via the signs of the zodiac and are identified in terms

of the earth via the rising sign and the corresponding houses. Planets rule

signs and are the key to planetary period caculation.

Nakshatras are the non moving heavenly bodies (constellations) against which the

the grahas moves. The position of the division of the zodiac is the placement of

different constellations on it.The constellations (Nakshatras) are divided in

areas in the sky. There are 27 Nakshatras. The division of Nakshatras is based

on the moon, which makes a complete cycle in the zodiac within one month. The

moon spends aproximately one day in each Nakshatra.

Q4 If you are able...Date of birth...March 29, 1949 Time 12:45 AM San Juan,

Puerto Rico
