Guest guest
om suragurubrihaspataye namah Dear Jyotishis, Please read through the following post carefully including details of payment procedure for membership fees and Jyotish Digest subscriptions. We had posted a message to SJC, Varahamihira and Vyasa Lists in late December 2002/early January 2003 announcing membership fees for both students and gurus. It is something, which we decided way back in October, and when some SJC members also strongly advocated the idea during the Hyderabad Conference, we went ahead and implemented it. So it is a very newly introduced concept, and an administrative necessity in order to systematize and consolidate the growth of the organization, as SJC grew over the years by the grace of Jagannath Mahaprabhu. So please bear with us through this process. We were planning to make a repeat announcement about the membership fees in a month’s time and have thought of making such an announcement periodically on the lists. Shortly, the details below will be put up on the web. We will soon post a detailed account as to why we feel membership fees are now necessary. I am sure it is apparent to the gurus, administrative members and those who are closely associated with us at a day-to-day level , of the numerous hidden and administrative costs of running SJC. During the Hyderabad conference, for example, Sanjayji has borne the costs of return plane and train tickets of a guru and a guest . Gurus in transit have to be provided accomodation and this too is borne by SJC. At other times we have accommodated gurus and members as houseguests so that costs are entirely saved and are borne by the individual hosts. This is a mode followed by most SJC gurus and members all over the world, especially in the US during conferences . The SJC web site has been registered and is maintained by a guru despite the fact that he is between jobs at the moment. There are many such instances, where SJC members have quietly paid from their pockets despite personal hardships. We want to alleviate their difficulties by taking a contribution from all the members so that many of these costs can be covered, as well as to generate funds for sustaining the organization. The administrative costs of running an organization are plenty, ranging from photocopies, transparencies, printing, postage, courier, bank work, Jyotish Digest, administrative expenses, secretarial help, local travel, free resources on the web, web site designing, web site maintenance, lawyers fees, (and soon auditors fees)...its an unending list. Please note we have not included guru dakshina or time devoted by members for administration work in lieu of their other professional commitment. Also note, we are contemplating moving to an independent office space for SJC , planning research and translation work in a big way and would like to venture into publishing; including brochures and flyers for conferences and sponsorship purposes. All this would require money. To start with, members would get benefits in the form of special prices on CDs and audio tapes, special concessions during conference registrations, free access to web resources etc. We will post a detailed mail on this soon. The annual SJC membership fees are as follows: India/ Indian Subcontinent (Indian rupees) Rest of the World (US dollars) Students Rs. 500 $ 30 Gurus Rs. 1000 $ 50 Both Indian and International members may submit checks directly to SJC's account. Details are as follows: Account name Sri Jagannath Centre Account number 0262000022052 Bank name HDFC Bank Address Old Rajinder Nagar Market, New Delhi, India .. Jyotish Digest: Jyotish Digest has now turned quarterly. A new look journal will be out by the end of this month. We have introduced new subscription rates, which will include postage costs. There have been complaints in the past that the magazine never reached the rs. The last issue was mailed by registered post and by courier service. This proved to be more satisfactory. The new subscription rates therefore include the heavy postage costs apart from covering the expenditure of producing the magazine. Our aim is to produce a quality journal which will publish papers of excellence according to the lines of research pursued and advocated by SJC and which will be different from other astrological journals in the market. So please bear with us while this transition takes place. The new annual subscription fees are as follows, including postage: Annual India/Indian Subcontinent (Indian rupees) Rs. 200 Rest of the World (US Dollars) $ 10 Subscriptions are to be paid to Sri Jagannath Centre in the abovementioned account name and number. Please note: International rs will not be able to pay the subscription directly into the account as the sum is below the minimum amount accepted by the Bank for foreign currency. We hope this answers some of the queries raised recently. As we formalize the structure we will be making more announcements Thank you for bearing with us, Best regards, Sarbani Sarkar President SJC - Asia
Guest guest
Dear Sandy, As Sanjay has already explained to you, he transfers his paypal amount to the account of his shishya (an US based SJC guru). This shishya as a personal favour to his guru then re-directs the amount to his account in India. So as you can see its a very cumbersome process. We can do this for SJC official matters, although we are contemplating of employing this method for Jyotish Digest international subscriptions. Please rest assured that we at SJC would explore al possible avenues for financial exchange, and if Pay Pal was a viable option we would have surely used it. Best regards, Sarbani Sarkar - Sandy Crowther vedic astrology ; Varahamihira (AT) (DOT) Com ; SJC Thursday, March 20, 2003 7:53 PM [sJC: Achyuta Gurukul] RE: [vedic astrology] FW: [sJC: Varahamihira] To all members: Membership Fees/Jyotish Digest Hare Rama KrishnaDear Sarbani,Thanks for both your email and time...I appreciate it. I understand that SJCdoes not have an account set up for SJC membership payment transfers, whichis fine, and I will do as you suggested for transferring funds. However, letme just address something (with respect to the Indian government) for thebenefit of the members who do have Paypal accounts...Your statement (below) remains quite confusing to me because PayPal doeslist India amongst the following accepted International accounts:http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/approved_countries-outside(Please see countries listed below).vedic astrology; Varahamihira (AT) (DOT) Com; SJCRE: [vedic astrology] FW: [sJC: Varahamihira] To all members:Membership Fees/Jyotish DigestDear Sandy,We cannot use Pay Pal as India does not yet 'recognise' it or providefacilities by which its citizens can avail of the Pay Pal services...yet.Hopefully our government will soon rectify the lacuna, so that it becomesconvenient for people across the globe to have smoother financial exchanges.Anyway, since this is a governmental policy level matter, I can't help youmuch about this. Now there are two ways that you can send checks to SJC. The first is thelonger way; that is, you simply post a check to SJC by snail mail and wedeposit it to the account when it reaches us. The second, is quicker andcheaper for you: this is a bank to bank transfer. Ask your Bank to transferthe required amount directly to SJC's account that we posted on the listearlier. And then there are more cumbersome and expensive methods like MoneyOrder/Telegraphic Transfer and Western Union Money Transfers. It does notmake any difference to us as to how you make the payment. The choice andconvenience is yours entirely. Till the government of India makes Pay Palaccessible to Indians, there is nothing much that we can do to make iteasier for you. If you have any other suggestions on the matter, please letus know, so that we can adopt the easiest process available for theconvenience of all.Best regards,Sarbani Sarkar-----Original Message-----Sandy Crowther [sandy (AT) toad (DOT) net]Tuesday, March 18, 2003 6:40 PMVedic-Astrology (AT) (DOT) Com; Varahamihira (AT) (DOT) Com; SJC[vedic astrology] FW: [sJC: Varahamihira] To all members:Membership Fees/Jyotish DigestSandy Crowther [sandy (AT) toad (DOT) net]Tuesday, March 18, 2003 8:00 AMTo: Sarbani SarkarCc: Sanjay RathRE: [sJC: Varahamihira] To all members: Membership Fees/JyotishDigestDear Sarbani,Please be assured that I only sent you ONE message, and certainly meant nopressure on you. I know you must be very busy with your duties. But pleaserealize that I have no control over how various routers or ISP's handle theoutgoing or incoming mails. My reason for asking you about membership transfers through Paypal isstrictly relative to security purposes when transferring fundsinternationally. Writing a personal check to any bank or financialinstitution, while simultaneously requesting (and trusting) that the moneybe deposited into a specific account at that bank, is not a normal procedureand is highly discouraged by administrative banking officials where I comefrom, which is the USA. However, I will do just that as you requested, byobtaining a Certified or Registered check for security reasons, and thenjust hope for the best. I hope this better explains my position and concerns, relative to thecultural differences in banking practices. My thoughts and concerns are alsorelated to the fact that this type of suggested monetary transfer may resultin actually impeding international participation in financially supportingSJC, if other members also have security concerns over the mode of suggestedtransfer. But this is really none of my business, so I will leave it atthat. I am merely trying to initiate your supportive awareness due tocultural differences in banking practices, and if I have initially hesitatedto date to do as you suggested because of concerns, I am sure I am notalone. I hope you understand now that I merely want to support SJC, withoutthe risk of getting "ripped off" as we say in the USA.
