Guest guest
Dear Kasturi and List, Both the Agni Puarana and Garuda Purana emphasise that Ekadashi has the supreme power of removing all sins. Remember Ekadashi is ruled by Mars, and those born under a Mars tithi dosha carries the burden of a lot of sins. Mars is Rudra-like, so I suppose performing Rudrabhishekham makes sense. I hope others can elaborate further on this. Both Puranas lay great significance on the fact, that while fasting, Ekadashi should not be conjoined Dashami. Dashami conjoined Ekadashi is strictly prohibited and is said to be evil, as asuras dwell in this tithi. Gandhari had fasted on a Dashami conjoined Ekadashi and hence she had lost her 100 sons. A Dwadashi conjoined Ekadashi is considered good, as Dwadashi is Vishnu's day. Hari lives in such tithis when Dwadashi is conjoined Ekadashi. Most Vishnu avatars were born on Dwadashi. A day when Dashami, Ekadashi and Dwadashi are conjoined, one should fast on Dwadashi and break it on Trayodashi. Even if there is a single kala of Ekadashi mixed with the Dwadashi, even then fast on the Dwadashi. The mere shadow of Dashami will cause plenty of evil. A day when Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi are conjoined is considered excellent. One can observe vratas on such days. Of course days when it is only Ekadashi is the best. Observe Ekadashi vrata by staying awake in the night, listening to the puranas and worshipping Gadadhara. There are various Ekadashi vratas described in the Puranas. Here is a couple of vratas from the Garuda Purana: 1. Starting with the month of Chaitra, worship the rishis every month with complete upachars. The rishis mentioned are Marichi, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Pracheta, Vashishtha, Bhrigu and Narada. This bestows a lot of wealth and many sons and after death, the soul resides in rishiloka. 2. Bhaimi Ekadashi is performed on Magha Shukla paksha if the Ekadashi falls in Hasta nakshatra. Bhima had observed this vrata to be relieved of pitri rina. Even if Magha Shukla Ekadashi does not fall in Hasta, the day is very auspicious and vrata observed on this day removes the sins of Brahmahatya. Sins such as Brahmahatya, alcoholism, having sexual relations with the guru's wife can only be removed with Ekadashi vrata. These sins cannot be removed by the following tirthas or pilgrimages: Pushkar, Naimisharanya, Kurukshetra, Prabhas, Kalindi, Yamuna, Ganga, Reva and Saraswati. They can only be removed by observing vrata on Bhaimi Ekadashi. This is equal to all tirtha, daana, japa and homa. Even if you give daana of the entire earth, even then such a charity is not comparable to the greatness of Ekadashi vrata. On a new copper ghata, establish the golden idol of Sri Varaha. Drape the idol with a white cloth and worship him with all upachars, golden pradeepas and the mantra Varahaya Namah. Break the fast on Dwadashi, but eat only a little upon breaking the fast. One who performs this, are not born again. A question arises in my mind. Varaha dev is represented by Rahu. So why do we worship Varahadev on Ekadashi? Is it because Rahu is the only one who can dominate Mars? The Mammiyur Mahadeva temple, 1 km from Guruvayur temple in Kerala, is among the well known for this special abhishekam.I am sure even if we perform Rudrabhishekam on Ekadasi, it will do us a lot of good. I am trying to learn the specific significance. Just thought I should share with you.SincerelyR.
