Guest guest
Dear Ramapriya and anyone interested, Just in case I confused anyone with my brief mail on British Summer Time (BST) I want to try and explain the concept as I know it. As you know the time is set for the World using GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) which is represented by the prime meridian which passes through the Greenwich observatory , just south of London. This meridian is the one designated as nought (zero) degrees longitude – 0 GMT. Each of the other meridians represent times east or west of this one. I think this started in the late 19th Century (? about 1885). In Britain , USA, most places in Europe and many elsewhere (eg Egypt,), daylight saving is superimposed on GMT. In Britain this is called British Summer Time (BST). As you also know, the time of sunrise changes throughout the year due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis. In order to take advantage of the daylight hours these countries put their clocks forward in April and return them to GMT time in October. Any birth record during these summer months will be one hour ahead of GMT so one hour has to be subtracted to return the birth time to GMT. In astrology software this can be done either by taking one hour off the recorded birth time or taking one hour off the GMT designation. In the winter months the recorded birth time is in GMT. During WW2 in Britain the clocks were one hour ahead in the winter months and two hours ahead in summer. This was called wartime saving. (There was little activity after dark because there was a ‘black out’ of lights to prevent enemy aircraft using them as targets). So for wartime births one hour has to be subtracted in winter and two hours in summer. In WW1 and the years between the wars there was daylight saving in some and not in others. Also the dates of putting the clocks forward and back again was not consistent. To be sure that birth time is accurate it is necessary to go through a list of the legislature concerning this. For this reason I suspect that some of the charts we use today of British born natives are one hour out. I hope this may help some list members.
