Guest guest
Dear Visti, just read an interesting sloka in BPHS. If Lagna is vargottama (i.e. Lagna in the same sign in Rasi as well as D-9) then Vimshottari dasa is the most appropriate. I have a vargottama As in Gemini and I find that to some extent Vimshottari Dasa shows the general trend of my life. It seems that Maharshi has already delegated applicability/appropriateness of particular Dasa systems for particular situations - Sourav

Guest guest
||Hare Rama Krsna|| Dear Sourav, Namaskar It is the same shloka – actually çloka 32. Çloka 31 deals with the calculations of Panchottari Dasa. Please get a copy of Brihat Parashara Horaa Shastra, with Sanskrit in it like G.C. Sharma or Santhanam’s edition, if you are going to be serious about Jyotish. Satabdika is another one of the conditional nakshatra Dasa’s. You can read about it in detail in “Udu Dasa’s” by Sanjay Rath. What does one do in cases where two dasa systems apply to a chart? For example, if lagna is vargottama and lagna lord is in 7th or 7th lord is in lagna, which dasa system is used? Vargottama Lagna would indicate that Shatabdika Dasas apply, whereas Lagna Lord in 7th or 7th Lord in lagna would indicate Dwisaptati Sama Dasa. If two dasa systems both apply to a chart, which one do you use? Are both used, and if so, which one takes precedence? How does one determine which dasa system will be primary, i.e. will have the strongest effect on the native? Also, when one of these dasa systems applies, does Vimshottari dasa have no effect or does it have some effect, but have a lesser influence (i.e. less strong)? Thanks in advance for your response. Guest guest
Hare Rama Krsna Susan, I am catching up on old mails, I am unsure if anyone has answered your query. I am copying a post from the Varahamihira list that is a question but is pointing in the right direction to the answer of your question. Namah Sivaya V. Sreelatha [venkatarama_sastry] Friday, November 19, 2004 11:57 PM varahamihira |Sri Varaha| Special Condition Dasas from Rath Ji's book Dear Gurus and friends, May I request your clarification on dasas? In Pundit Rathji's Vimsottari and Udu Dasas book, he explains a number of special condition dasas. On page 36 of the book, his advice is to use "the order of precedence given by Parasara to select the suitable dasa". He also says "in case of doubt, use the first source of strangth for affirmation". However, on page 44 while analyzing Swami Vivekananda's horoscope, he illustrates how to use a dasa that is lower in precedence, since the governor of that dasa is stronger. So, is the rule to first see which governor is stronger, and then apply that dasa, and in the special case where the governors are equally strong, to apply the dasa of the strongest governor? My natal chart satisfies the criteria of 3 special conditions, the Ashtottari, Panchottari and Satabdika. I am curious as to which dasa to apply in my case. Sanjay Ji mentions the special case of both Panchottari and Satabdika (vargottama lagna between 0-2.5 degrees in cancer) on page 39, and recommends the use of Panchottari. Astottari dasa has as its theme, export of knowledge or goods or services. Panchottari has the theme of Radha and Krishna's love that leads to Moksha. Satabdika has the theme of strong ideals and beliefs and protection from Mrityunjaya. My personal perception is that Panchottari describes the theme of my life the best, since Krishna prema has permeated my life from early childhood, even though our family does not have a tradition of worshipping Krishna any more than the other forms of God. The other themes may possibly be applied too, in some fashion. I don't think this is the appropriate way of deciding which dasa to use though. Could my learned friends please enlighten me on the appropriate special dasa to study for this chart? DOB: Oct 6, 1967, 00:39:40 AM Hyderabad, India Thank you for your help. No, I had not heard back from anyone yet. Thanks for the post from Varahamihira list with the reference from Vimshottari and Udu Dasas. Were there any responses to this question posted on Varahamihira list that I could read? I am not a member of Varahamihira group. I sat down and re-read through Chapter 3, Dasa Applicability, in the Vimshottari and Udu Dasas book last night. I was left with the following questions. 1. When does one follow Parasara's order of precedence for special dasas and when does one select the dasa based on First Source of Strength? Does Parasara's order of precedence ever override the strongest governor? Or is the strongest governor always given precedence in selecting the dasa? 2. Which critera for the First Source of Strength are used? Are the criteria the same as those used for First Source of Strength for Narayana Dasa (as listed in Narayana Dasa pp 21-24)? The examples for selecting special Udu Dasas all use Rule 1 of the First Source of Strength, i.e. the relationship between the dasa governor and the AK. Dasa governor in kendra from AK is strongest. Dasa governor in parampara (2, 5, 8, 11th) from AK is second strongest. Dasa governor in apoklima (3, 6, 9, 12th) from AK is weakest. If the governors are both in kendras to AK, (or both in panapara, or both in apoklima to AK), then does one proceed with Rules 2 through 8 (as used for Narayana Dasa) to determine First Source of Strength? Are these other 7 rules used when determining dasa applicability, or is only the relationship to the AK considered? 3. Chart 6 (pp. 45-47) also takes into consideration the dasa governor being lagna lord as a source of its strength. If governor is lagna lord, is this considered stronger than the criteria in Rules 2-8, First Source of Strength, (after considering its relationship to AK)? 4. Is Second Source of Strength (i.e. dasa governor aspected by its dispositor, Mercury,or Jupiter) included in determining strength of governor, or is this rule omitted in this context? Hope these questions are clear. Please let me know if they require further clarification. Thanks so much for your response to my questions.
