Guest guest
Dear friends, Wish you all a very happy new year! The Western New Year is celebrated on January 1st of every year. The Solar New Year, on the other hand, is celebrated when Surya enters Mesha as per the sidereal zodiac. Mesha here assumes significance not because it is the first sign of the zodiac, but because it begins with Ashwini, the first star of the zodiac. This star is owned by the divine Moksha Karaka Ketu. Thus, the Solar New Year is a celebration of Surya, the soul, surrendering to the moksha tattwa that is inherent in Ketu. Of course, by this logic, one expects Surya to attain ucchatva at zero degrees Mesha. However, Surya only attains ucchatva in the 10th degree of Mesha. Why? This is symbolic of the soul that refuses the concept of Moksha even when it is handed to it on a platter, so to speak. To analyze this, let us study the Navamsa, which represents divinity by being the 9th division. We can also consider the 9th house (in the Navamsa) from the sign concerned to get a clearer picture. Surya, when it enters Mesha, is placed in the Navamsa of Kuja, and is entrapped by delusions of glory. From here, the 9th is ruled by Guru, who, though being the natural karaka for religion, is too steeped in tradition. Since glory is traditionally enjoyed by kings, Guru doesn't teach Surya anything. Then, it moves into the second Navamsa, and tastes the luxuries offered by Sukra. The 9th from this belongs to Sani's house Kumba. Surya, however, is caught up in pleasure, and doesn't understand the concept of Vairagya that is so dear to Sani. Finally, it enters the Navamsa of Budha the karaka of intelligence and discrimination [Viveka]. The 9th from this house is the Moolatrikona of Sani [Vairagya]. The soul then uses intelligence to realize that Moksha alone is the end goal, and surrenders graciously to Ketu's overwhelming influence by blending Viveka and Vairagya. Then, Ketu, the eclipse-maker, destroys the ego of Surya and enables the soul to realize the true path of God realization. This concept of surrender is evident in religious texts. For example, Sri Krishna, in the Bagavat Gita, says: Sarva dharmAn parithyajya Maam yEkam SaraNam vraja aham thvA sarva paapEya: mokshayishyAmi maa sucha (Leaving aside all dharmas, take refuge in Me and Me alone I shall free you of all sins, worry not) Charles de Foucauld in his "Prayer of Abandonment" says: Into Your hands I commend my soul; I offer it to You with all the love of my heart, for I love You Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into Your hands, without reserve, and with boundless confidence Surrendering to Him is not easy, because Mesha is the Moolatrikona of Kuja, the fighter. The soul, not realizing the divinity that can be accrued through Moksha, wants to remain trapped in this world. Kuja, as the Commander in chief, also seeks glory, and this merely serves to enhance the egoistical nature of the soul. The bravado of Kuja makes us believe that we have the power to change things on our own. However, situations that we cannot change teaches us humility. We understand that, apart from appealing to Him, there is perhaps not much else that we can do. >From this helplessness is born humility. From humility springs the destruction of the ego. And this leads us to surrender [Ketu] to His will. When we do that, He takes care of everything else. Of course, this is difficult in practice, and most of us, being mere mortals, fail. But God recognizes the desire and the act of attempting to come closer to Him. He is not concerned with failure - after all, with His grace, He knows that He can make us succeed. Thus, the desire to surrender comes from Him, as reflected in our birth charts. Salvation, the result of surrender, also comes from Him and Him alone. So, the Solar New Year is a message to all of us about how the soul [surya], by relying on viveka [budha], learns the meaning of vairagya [sani], thereby shedding the ego [surya again], and shuns glory [Kuja], thus embracing the concept of Moksha [Ketu] to reach God in His realm. And God's servants, the Nava Grahas, are here to ensure that we can understand this message loud and clear! ~~~~~~~ Balaji Narasimhan * http://www.sherlock-holmes.com/balaji.htm Author, Sherlock Holmes: Solutions from the Sussex Downs Editor, The Partial Art of Detection ~~~~~~~ ________ DSL – Something to write home about. Guest guest
Dear Balaji, Is it correct that the Solar New year begins Mar 26 2006, and is it correct that the chart (for each country) is cast for sunrise on that day? PS: I'll be away from the list for the weekend as I busy myself trying to rectify my internet problems and, hopefully, some R & R watching the tennis :-) Happy New Year everyone!! Best Wishes, Mrs. Wendy http://JyotishVidya.com ______________________________ - "Balaji Narasimhan" <sherlockbalaji <jyotish-vidya> Friday, December 30, 2005 8:58 PM The concept of surrender and a happy new year Dear friends, Wish you all a very happy new year!
