Dear All,

In page 237 of "Three hundred important combinations" by B.V. Raman

there is a reference to Raja Yoga caused by:

"Definition:- When a planet is in debilitation but with bright rays,

or retrograde, and occupies favourable position, Raja Yoga will be

caused."

He also cites an example in chart no. 116.

In Shri P.V.R Narasimha Rao's book "Lessons On vedic Astrology

(Volume 1)" in Lesson no. 9,

"28. A planet in debilitation and retrograde is akin to being exalted.

"

Is there a mention of this in some of the classical references on

astrology like BPHS or Jaimini sutras?

Could some please throw some light on this.

Thanks

Tarak

Dear Tarak,

See Parashara Ch 27 (Evaluation of strengths):

21-23. PLANETARY MOTIONS (MARS TO SATURN):

"Eight kinds of motions are attributed to planets. These are Vakra

(retrogression), Anuvakra (entering the previous sign in retrograde

motion), Vikala (devoid of Motion or in stationary position), Manda

(somewhat slower motion than usual), Mandatara (slower than the

previous mentioned motion), Sama (somewhat increasing in motion as

against Manda), Chara (faster than Sama), and Atichara (entering next

sign in accelerated motion). The strengths allotted due to such 8

motions are : 60, 30, 15, 30, 15, 7.5, 45, and 30."

A planet in retrograde motion (vakra) is stronger than normal due to

its slower motion. Some conclude that this is same as being exalted.

However, in my opinion, it means that the influence the retrograde

planet has on the bhava it occupies is more powerful...for better or

worse depending on the nature of the planet in a given horoscope.

There are contradicting opinions on this, of course :-(

Best Wishes,

Mrs. Wendy

Dear Mrs.Wendy,

Thanks for the information. In my daughter's navamsha

chart - Saturn which is her atmakaraka is retrograde

and is placed in aries (Debilitated) in the fourth

bhava. (Navamsha lagna is aquarius), She also has the

Arudra Lagna in the fourth along with the atmakaraka.

In your opinion what would the influence of the

retrograde planet manifest in her life?

Her chart details:

Dec 24, 1974.

12:55 PM (IST)

Longitude: 78 E 42 Latitude: 10 N 48

(Meena lagnam and mesha rashi)

Thanks and Regards

Tarak

UTTARA KALAMRITA, Kalidsa (Dr. P.S. Sastri, Rajan Publication, page

30)

A planet exalted in the Rasi while retrograde is similar to a

debilitated one...A retrogarde planet in his debilitation has the

strength of exaltation.
