I wanted to share with you something I found in Sarvath Chintamani (earlier

chapters) on the classified exaltation / debilitation of the planets.

 

Sage Parasara has also pointed out certain degrees, and hence, lead the reader

into studying the Nakshatras further…

BPHS (English) Translation:

Ch. 3. Grah Characters and Description

49-50. Exaltation and Debilitation. For the seven Grahas, from Sūrya on,

the exaltation Rashis are, respectively, Mesh, Vrishabh, Makar, Kanya, Kark,

Meen and Tula. The deepest exaltation degrees are, respectively, 10, 3, 28, 15,

5, 27 and 20 in those Rashis. And in the seventh Rashi from the said exaltation

Rashi each Grah has its own debilitation. The same degrees of deep exaltation

apply to deep fall.

51-54. Additional Dignities. In Simh the first 20 degrees are Sūrya’s

Mooltrikon, while the rest is his own Bhava. After the first 3 degrees of

exaltation portion in Vrishabh, for Candr, the rest is her Mooltrikon. Mangal

has the first 12 degrees in Mesh, as Mooltrikon with the rest therein becoming

simply his own Bhava. For Budh, in Kanya the first 15 degrees are exaltation

zone, the next 5 degrees Mooltrikon and the last 10 degrees are own Bhava. The

first one third of Dhanu is the Mooltrikon of Guru, while the remaining part

thereof is his own Bhava. Śukr divides Tula into two halves keeping the

first, as Mooltrikon and the second, as own Bhava. Śani’s arrangements are

same in Kumbh, as Sūrya has in Simh.

Chapter 1

Translator's Note

 

"A question may be raised as to why a particular Planet gets

exalted in a particular sign an degree. So far as we are aware no

Author as answered this question. We, however, think that this

can be explained on the basis of spirituality to which astrology

owes all allegiance being its main limb. The 10th degree of Aries falls

in the asterism Ashvini whose lord is Ketu. Ketu has been declared

by astrology as the "Moksha" karaka i.e. the significator for

salvation. The Sun is very well known as the "Atma" in the Vedas."

 

Soorya Aatma JagatStaSyuShaCha

[sanskrit]

 

"Ths Sun in the 10th degree of Aries means Atma in Moksha,

obviously the highest state that the Atma can aspire to. Thus the

exaltation of the Sun in the 10th degree of Aries is perfectly in

consonance with the spiritual principles. Now, why is Sun exalted in

Aries and not in Leo or Saggitarius, for if availability of Ketu is the

criterion, this asterism is equally available in Leo and Saggitarius.

The answer to this part of the question in that Leo and Saggitarius

belong to the "Satvik" Sun and Jupiter. The signs of these planets

can hardly constitute a testing ground for the exalted Sun. It is only

the sign of the sinful Mars which can offer a suitable testing

ground for the purpose, for the Atma in Moksha is untouched by

sin."

(5) Venus gets exalted in the 27th degree of Pisces which falls in the

Asterism Revati belonging to Mercury. Venus, a most luxury loving

And sensuous planet, is normally averse to the precepts of the shastras

denoted by Jupiter. But when he gets the spiritual intellect of

Mercury, he gets changed spiritually and then Pisces constituting a

testing ground for him no longer remains a problem for him. No

other sign containing the asterism of Mercury is religious enough

to offer a testing ground to Venus."

An especially warm welcome back to Visitji. It seemed like an eternity you were

away!

 

I am trying to understand some of the fundamentals of Jyotish... a part of which

involves explaining the Ucche, Swakshetra and Moolatrikona of all the planets,

based on what they signify. I'm trying to compile a complete list of

explanations based on a lesson that Vistji posted on this list a long while

back. I'm stuck on a few and would be very grateful for some help:

 

Saturn: Moolatrikona for Saturn is Aquarius, the 11th house of the natural

zodiac. Please help me understand why this is. Given that Saturn would like us

to give freely, why is its duty in the house of gains?

 

Mercury: Moolatrikona is the 6th house, Virgo. Mercury's Ucche is also in

Virgo. Again, I can't explain these two. Please guide me.

 

Sun: His Ucche is Aries, the 1st house. How do we explain this? Doesn't the

Sun represent the supersoul - the antithesis of ego? Then why does he enjoy

being in the first house?

 

Mars: His Moolatrikona is Aries, the 1st house. Is this because his duty is to

foster individuality and the ego?

 

If the learned members would consider it of benefit, perhaps I could post my

attempt at the complete set of explanations, for correction and discussion.
