Dear List members, Namaskar,

According to Sanjay Rath, for the purposes of calculation of the Hora Lagna

(and presumably other special lagnas and upagrahas), Sunrise is to be defined as

first light, i.e, the time at which the tip

of the sun appears to be on the horizon. [Ref Sanjayji's article on the

HL presented at the London

conference - http://srath.com/conf/horalagna.pdf]

In Jagannatha Hora, however, the default definition of sunrise is "The centre of

the Sun's disk is truly on the

Eastern horizon"...

Could anyone tell me which of these two is recommended?

Dear Samir,

If you see the Sunrise and Sunset options under the Calculations tab in

Preferences, there are 3 option for Sunrise. Two are that you mention and the

third one is the tip of the Sun's disk is truly on the horizon. The default

option is the geocentric one, and is used by many. In fact there is a lot of

debate among astrologers, as to which of the three methods are accurate, but

none are sacrosanct. The difference that one method over the other would cause

is in the calculation of the special lagnas like Hora Lagna etc.

Best regards,

Dear Sameer,

I would go with apparent tip of Sun rising, as Drikganita formed the

basis of Siddhanta calculations.

Om Namo Bhagavate Dakshinamurtaye

Dear Sanjayji and SJC List,

Firstly, I wanted to say that I really don't know what all this is about. I

don't think I disagreed with anyone at all. I don't think anyone disagreed with

anyone. So I am a little confused. Secondly, I was very keen that the list

benefited from Brendan's work. I have been fortunate to have listened to them

at the SJC conferences and workshops, as have Visti and a few others. You have

always instructed me that it was my role to bring people together and have the

knowledge shared and distributed. I did not know that Brendan had kept his

list email options at 'no mail', as he told me later.

Thirdly, young Samarth Rao, Katti Narahari's student from Bangalore has just

finished his ayurveda degree. He had called and said that he wanted to work in

ayurveda and jyotish. He too tried his hand in analysis. I thought that it

would be wonderful to hear both of them talk 'ayurveda and jyotish' and good

for the SJC classroom. I had asked Visti's opinion as he handles this list like

a master pilot and I have a deep regard for his theoretical knowledge. Hence I

was interested to know what his opinion was in the matter, as a beacon.

Lakshmi's pointer definitely made everyone re-think their basics. I did not

realize anyone was disagreeing or even arguing! Of course, Mercury is

debilitated and retrograde at the moment...

Meanwhile, the main issue was the chart of a very young boy with asthma posted

by Kasturi. Kasturi had to leave in the middle of the discussion as his

mother-in-law was suddenly hospitalised. He only returned yesterday.

However, I will remain off list from SJC forums for the rest of the year. I

hardly posted on jyotish in the lists in the past year or so anyways. So I will

simply return to my hibernation. As you instructed me a month ago, that I have a

'mission' in front of me, and that I should not let anything dissuade me from

that path. It is a very difficult task! We are not all Arjuna, with the eye

only on the fish! But I do realize that all these are tests and tribulations,

to check our resolution.

I remember two years ago, when you underwent a similar, and worse experience on

these lists, where your integrity and knowledge came under virulent attack. You

maintained your dignity in utter and absolute silence and kept focus on your

guru's goal in front of you. You have asked me to do the same. I will try and

learn from your example. But its a stupendous effort. I would sincerely like to

thank Sarajit, Zoran, Ramapriya and Raghunatha Rao Nemani who have been a great

support to me in the past month.

Best regards,

Dear SJC Jyotisa

Once is a while we have some discussions about some aspects of Jyotish out here

while most ofthe time Jyotish Guru Visti Larsen has been doing a stupendous job

in teaching all of you. This is to clarify that normally our discussions among

Jyotish Gurus and senior astrologers is at Varahamihira forum but sometimes it

spills out here. We don't want you all to have any notions or any doubts about

what Visti Larsen is teaching at this forum due to our discussions. All we want

you to have is the flavor ofthe brilliant discussions that take place and the

kind of shastra related dialogues.

Recently you saw the brilliance of Jyotish Gurus Lakshmi Ramesh, Sarbani Sarkar

and the deep understanding of Brendan Feeley while discussing the Chest.

This is to clarify that Lakshmi Rmaesh is *right* and so also Brendan, Visti and

Sarbani and each of the others who participated as there is nothing called 100%

right at that level of Jyotish. I was unnecessarily worried that you would draw

some wrong notions about right and wrong and this is misplaced. I know that you

all are very mature and leared people in this list and also apprecite such

discussions that spill over from Varahamihira once in a while.

We assure you that with the kind of research being done by the Jyotish Gurus you

will soon see a new level of Jyotish which perhaps will excel the depth and

quality of the Great Varahamihira and that era...

So kindly keep keep encouraging each of the participants as the going can

sometimes be very very tough when answers are not easily forthcoming. After all

you all stand to gain from their hard work and study.

To the Gurvi's of SJC - Lakshmi & Sarbani...please keep the compassion flowing

along with your brilliance.

With kind regards,

Sanjay Rath

Om Namo Bhagawate Vasudevay

Dear Sarbani Ji,

Pranam.

It is expected, and requested that you shall reconsider your

decision. Being absent from lists will not harm you, but will

certainly hinder free exchange of knowledge and thereby it shall be

anegative factor for learners.

I request Lord Shri Krishna to invoke your motherly instinct and make

you reconsider your decision.

If one learner abstains from the list or class, the loss is primarily

individual. When one Guru goes off the list (or class), the loss is

of Samashti, not Vyashti.

Gurus are mature persons who are not supposed to be controlled by

emotions but rather able to control them; they are expected to be

elevated and keep benefits of the society and students even before

personal issues.

I do hope that I do not sound too elderly or teaching type, kindly

consider my words as request only; but anyway, who knows who is the

teacher and who is disciple today and who was who in earlier/ shall

be existences. Even regarding different issues the roles may be

different.

BTW, I am tempted to share one piece of knowledge from Puranas (I do

not remember exact reference right now). I have read in some Purana

the 4 things (regarding the learning process and education in

particular) - that (i) One should not show negligence towards elderly

and children and be tolerant with them, (ii) One should not criticise

colleagues or contemporaries without first understanding them, (iii)

One should not disrespect the learned, and (iv)One should not argue

with the fools.

Kindly consider learners as children and be compassionate.

Om Shri Krishnarpanamastu.

Radhe-Krishna,

Himanshu Mohan

P.S.: I too am a rather introvert type and presently interacting with

much effort for two reasons -

(i) I have not been lucky enough to be blessed by any Guru and from

messages at SJC I gathered that Gurus may consider to accept one as

disciple based on various things, among which interaction at list is

one parameter, and

(ii)Second, more important reason is that recently we have seen Guru

Shri Chandrashekhar ji, Shri Sanjay ji go off lists (VA). Guru Shri

Narasimha ji has alredy declared that he is busy (and there shall be

no version of JH for SIX months at least). His presence in lists is

also minimal. They may all be active on other forums, but what about

learners here?

Do we hang here just for fun? And what fun, if no guidance from Gurus!

Now You also wish to abstain!

Hari Ichchha!!

Himanshu Mohan

Om Namo Bhagavate Dakshinamurtaye

Dear Lakshmi,

If you leave SJC, then whom will I share (not teach) it with? I am a student who

has not even begun to learn about mantras, but my Mantrapada in lagna gives this

false and grandiose arudha about myself! The last one month has been all about

arudhas. But let us keep that aside. This is not the forum for it, otherwise

Visti will soon rusticate all of us from his class!

Do you recall, what C. S. Patel said in the Mumbai conference about

retrogression? That when malefics retrograde and re-enter the previous sign, it

is the worse period? Saturn retrograded into Gemini and is now there direct.

Rahu moved into Pisces on March 25th. Do you think this has created an

imbalance in the dual signs? As you know, the dual signs are supposed to be in

perfect balance as they are replete with satva guna, and hence they aspect each

other. But with Saturn in Gemini and rahu in Pisces, do you think this harmony

is disbalanced? Note, in the past month, all dual signs have been

affected/disturbed in our forums...input from other dual sign gurus and

students are solicited. Maybe I am totally off key here, but the thought did

pass my mind...and this condition will be there till June. This is a not a

very happy thought and we must be careful.

Best regards,

Sarbani
