Dear Vistiji, Namaskar,

1. In your article on Tattva, you explain how to determine the

birth Yama. Ths order of Yama lords is given by a clockwise

movement around the Kalachakra. There are 8 Yama's in a 24-hour

period.

Now in Sanjayji's translation of the Jaimini Sutras, (Adhyaya 1 Pada 2),

he explains how to find Gulika: "The day duration is divided

into 8 parts (called Yama) and, beginning from the weekday lord, in the

sequence of the days of the week, each planet owns one part. The

eighth is owned by Gulika." Here, there are 16 Yama's in one

24-hour period.

Presumably these are two totally different Yama's. If so, What is

the latter used for apart from finding Gulika?

2. To continue the above quote: "Thus, Gulika is the ascendant

for the time ending the part ruled by Saturn".

But Narasimha Rao says that Gulika will rise in the middle portion

of Saturn's part. This definition is what JH uses. Which is

correct?

Thank you and Pranaam,

Samir

Dear Samir,

Namaskar

font-family:"Bookman Old Style"">There are eight Yama and sixteen kala. Kala

is darkness and is very evil. The Upagrahas are based on the kala.

font-family:"Bookman Old Style"">The default options in Jagannath Hora may

not be yours or Sanjayji’s preference. Until recently Sanjayji was

convinced that the position of Mandi could not be calculated with

Jagannath Hora due to his experience with the prior releases, until i

showed him the new option for the eighth kala.

Dear Vistiji, Namaskar

Thank you for that. I'm confused about something else now though:

It appears that the Kaala used for calculating the Upagrahas progress

in weekday order (with the 8th being lordless). It also appears

that this is dependent on local sunrise/sunset times.

And then there's the Kaala reckoned from the Kaalachakra. This

progresses in clockwise order around the Kalachakra. It is also

independent of sunrise/sunset as far as I know, starting at 6am.

Hence each period has a fixed time-span. So are these both called Kaala?

Could you kindly tell me where I could find Sanjayji's recommendations

for the calculation of all the Upagrahas?

Pranaam,

Samir

Dear Samir,

Namaskar

First of

all there is a kala which follows the Sun, and then there is one which doesn’t.

I’m not talking about yama here.

The one

which follows the Sun will indicate the upagrahas. The one which doesn’t

will follow the kala chakra. The one which follows the kala chakra can be used

to time when one should perform remedies and is also the one which reveals us

the dreaded rahu-kaalam.
