1. Introduction to Michael Laughrin's North American Jyotish

Newsletter

I offer you this newsletter to enhance and deepen your experience of

Vedic Astrology. In these newsletters, expect to find a combination

of helpful articles, book reviews, Jyotish links and more. The

purpose of this newsletter is to educate and titillate the Jyotish-

loving public. The opinions given within are solely those of Michael

Laughrin.

In this issue, the talented jyotishi Alison Nielsen offers an

article on her best Jyotish talent: chart rectification. If one is

uncertain of their birth time, they must consider consulting

Alison. In my opinion, Ms. Nielsen is the very best thumbprint

chart rectifier in North America. Alison also co-authored this

issue's latest list of useful Sanskrit phrases.

For the first time, I offer a conversation with a planet: Lord

Saturn. Since I can "speak" to the planets, and "hear" them, I offer

insight into the essence of Saturn's teachings.

I also recommend Bill Farber, Reiki Master, for energy work.

Please visit my website at http://www.jyotish.ws at your

convenience. I offer Traditional/Classical Vedic Astrology,

Intuitional Jyotish (Vedic Astrology based on deep intuition),

Chakra Readings, and Advanced Structured Psychic Work (for deeper

interpretation of your karmic pattern).

"Bless you! As always, this is a delight to read. The 108 words are

godsends (so to speak)...What a clever and generous fellow you

are." – a reader

2. A Conversation with Lord Saturn

By Michael Laughrin (Michael)

I have had a number of conversations with Lord Saturn, and he is not

such as bad guy as many make him out to be. Lord Saturn has told me

something like this:

"Look, I get all the dummies and losers in my class (Saturn is a

teacher). And I can't kick them out of class for misbehaving. In

general, this type of student neither listens, nor learns, nor co-

operates with the teacher. I start out by politely asking them to

behave. If that doesn't work (and it generally does not), I am

forced to raise my voice to them. Once in a while (about 10% of the

time), that gets their attention and their behavior improves a

little (with about 10% of the students). When that doesn't work, I

lightly punish them. For example, I make them stand for an hour or

two without talking or making any noise. That works once in a while.

"But, for the vast majority of the karmically learning disabled in

my class, the only thing that really gets their attention is

harshness -- extreme harshness. Examples of this could be:

- Yelling and screaming at them for hours at a time, or

- Rapping their knuckles with a ruler, or even

- Forcing them to do pushups and sit-ups until they are thoroughly

exhausted."

Saturn goes on: "Often -- in about 40% of the cases -- even these

frightening measures do not work. Or else they work only for a few

days at best. Then, because there is no other planet (other than

Rahu and Ketu on occasion) to do the job, I am forced to let them

feel a little of the full brunt of their bad karmas for this

lifetime. These generally result in sickness, poverty, loss of

loved ones, loss of work, loneliness and even death (accompanied by

a great deal of suffering). These hard-core methods *do*,

generally, get their attention. But about 30% to 45% of those who

experience what are considered typical "Saturnine" results crumble

under the strain and become alcoholics, junkies, homeless, mentally

ill or just plain give up hope. Many fall into a deep depression

from which it takes years to emerge.

"Please do not get unduly upset! I am not such a bad guy. All I

really want is a little respect. Some discipline. Some devotion.

By virtue of the fact that you are reading this article you most

likely meditate every day or engage in some other benevolent

spiritual practice on a regular basis. That is most of what I

want.

"In general, anyone who is pretty disciplined in at least two areas

of life has my partial blessings; for example, regular meditation

and paying one's bills regularly. If one is disciplined in three big

things, I make him successful. If one is disciplined in four or

more areas (and it is rather rare) I extend huge blessings to that

lucky Soul, such as wealth, fame, happiness (the best kind -- the

kind that can only come from a balanced life) or even

Enlightenment.

"I am, after all, a Teacher. I want you all to succeed. But you

all must learn that slow and steady wins the race. Practice makes

perfect. What I do not like is complete self-indulgence and

impetuosity. Nothing worthwhile in life comes without my blessings

and energy. No great works of art or music, no huge fortunes, no

saints are made without me. Certainly no good buildings or gardens

exist without me. No educational attainments, no career or business

success can occur for long without my blessings. It is all so

simple.

"Let me give you the Essence of my Knowledge in a few, easy-to-

remember rules:

- Do not spend all your energy (money, attention) at once. Save.

- Improve your skills -- whether as a brain surgeon or short order

cook -- it does not matter.

- Learn the value of learning through repetition.

- It is better to dig one deep hole (to make a well) than one

hundred shallow holes.

- Be centered and mentally steady. Meditate. Pray.

- Be self-sufficient. Do not count on others too much.

- Complaining as an occasional pastime is OK. Many make it into a

lifestyle. Don't do it.

"We are all servants -- whether rich or poor, young or old, educated

or ignorant. The only choice we have is whom we serve and in what

manner do we serve. To become a millionaire (or, more likely, a

billionaire) serve (or help) millions of individuals.

Exercise. Use it or lose it: this not only applies to our muscles,

but to our minds, our capacity to love and our creative abilities.

The only thing that, once gained, never leaves is Enlightenment

(Moksha).

"This is the Essence of my Teaching." -- Saturn

Om shri Shanaischaraia Namaha.

3. The Art and Science of Rectification

By Alison Nielsen (premavratini)

Jyotish can be a stunningly detailed and accurate oracular system

when practiced by a competent jyotishi who, most importantly, has an

accurate birth time to work with. Due to jyotish's tremendously

refined systems of prediction, even minor errors in birth time can

lead to discrepancies in timing of events and in the placement of

signifiers in the divisional charts (harmonics of the birth chart

that change in very small increments of time). If these signifiers

are misplaced, their meaning changes significantly.

Mercifully, like all things in India, Jyotish has equally prescient

methods for reverse engineering someone's time of birth when it is

not known. Two methods for establishing the birth time are

examination of the thumbprint and life history. The first can be a

far more expedient method. Narendra Desai, who was one of the

greatest Indian jyotishis to come to the West, specialized in this

method. While in some ways simple, it requires a practiced eye and

intuition, just as all jyotish does. However, the methodology is

quick. It only requires an examination of the thumbprint in order to

determine the shape and size of the whorl. Also, the jyotishi looks

for special markings that indicate the presence or absence of

planets in the lagna, a helpful adjunct since a few of the whorls in

adjacent signs are quite similar.

The second method is much more time consuming, but I always use it

for confirmation of the thumbprint anyway. This involves acquiring a

list of significant events and their dates from the person with the

birth time in question and then matching the horoscope to the

events. In this method I always find descriptive detail more

important than events. A good physical and character description

along with particulars about mother and father, make and model of

car and other such details can narrow the picture a lot more

effectively and expediently than mere dates. However, dates are also

good, particularly if the person has experienced a similar thing

several times (certain planets are likely to give the same result

time and time again).

A third method to confirm the results of the previous two is to take

a look at the prashna, (the placement of the signs and planets at

the moment that the rectification is performed) and/or nimitta

(omens). Indian thought holds that the planetary universe is a

hologram and the moment always reveals the subject matter at hand if

one knows where and how to look.

An accurate birth time gives a far more satisfying relationship with

Jyotish -- much more accurate readings with significantly higher

accuracy. This universe is a Lila, a divine play of the lord;

therefore, not everything can be known in advance. We must all

sometimes be tricked into cooperating with the divine plan. In order

to keep the Lila in motion, jyotish has been cursed three times in

India's divine history, thereby preventing any jyotishi from being

more than 85-90% accurate. A good jyotishi should bat somewhere

between 700 and 900. Otherwise, one should choose another astrologer

or have one's birth time rectified.

4. More Sanskrit Words

By Michael Laughrin (Michael) and Alison Nielsen

(premavratini)
