Issues on chanting Mantras--more on Gurus & initiation

Hello Manoj:

It's Christmas time and half my office is gone so I have

some "goofing-off" time now. So, more thoughts on Gurus and

initiation.

See Manoj, if you're ever in India and are lucky to meet a JAIN sadhu

or sadhvi, try to get their blessings. -- These Jain saints fascinate

me. The penance committed by these Jain holy-men and women is

unbelievable.

Such men and women after decades of penance, poverty, purity and self-

deprivation attain somuch occult power that they can truly "initiate"

someone.

I haven't been lucky enough to get near a Jain sadhu or sadhvi.

For the foreigners who're uninformed about Jains--these are people

practicing "Jainism" which is a derivative of the Hinduism. Jainism

preaches that humans shouldn't harm any form of life, i.e. other

humans or animals. And that humans shouldn't have ill-will towards

anyone--even toward the people who've hurt them and forgive EVERYONE.

There is one phrase that Jains say so often to others--"Micchami

Dukkadam," i.e. please forgive me.

Also, try meeting Buddhist monks--these monks and nuns spend their

entire lives living in poverty, penance and self-deprivation.

In fact, I've read somewhere that when Buddhist nuns/women who were

raped by the Chinese army in Tibet, were interviewed by a newspaper

and asked what punishment they sought for the rapists?--these nuns

replied that they had already forgiven the rapists and felt NO ill-

will towards the rapists. Wow!!! I wish I had such a power to forgive

others. I still couldn't get over and forgive my two wives who took

on lovers and cheated on me, and it's been years since this happened.

I'm not canvasing for other religions here, but I've noted that

Buddhism and Jainism are two religions where sins and sorrows

associated with materialism/modernism haven't crept in yet.

Ok. got to get some work done. Maybe Mr. Rohini Ranjan can write more

about Gurus and initiation and real holy-men and holy-women he has

met--I know he's travelled all over India for his Jyotish and

religious pursuits.

Thanks a lot for taking time off and writing on the

issue. I have noted the contents and would try and do

all the stuff you have mentioned as regards

initiation.

By the way, my wife is a jain and I get to learn so

many things about jainism.

thanks
