Dear Srinivas Ji,

There are two rattis, one equals to 121 mg, and another equals to 181 mg. If I

remember correctly then the 181 mg one is used when measuring gemstones etc.

On the other hand, 5 carats make one gram (=1000 mg) so it means 1 carat = 200

mg.

Best wishes

Tanvir.

~ Om Namah Shivaya ~

Dear Srinivas,

I would like to add to what Tanvir has said.

1 carat = 200 mg

1 Ratti = 180 mg

So, if you purchase the gemstone by weighing in

carats, please multiply it by 200 and then divide the

result by 180 mg.

Also, do not purchase the gems having .75 ratti (e.g

5.75, 6.75, 7.75 and so on).

The ideal weight for yellow sapphire should be between

5-5.5 ratti or 7 to 7.5 ratti. Next 11 and 13 ratti

are considered, but they would be too costly. Wear it

in gold in ring finger (right hand) or round the neck

in locket on thursday (waxing moon days) in the hora

of Jupiter. Be sure to purify the gem and energize the

gem by chanting mantra for Jupiter.

Regards,

Dear Tanvir,

Ratti is actually a seed of a plant. The seed has a typical

quality that all seeds are equal in weight which is aprox 120 to 122 mgs. The

seed is half black and half red in colour and is about the size of a wheat

grain. It was in use since ancient times for doing minute measurements required

in gems, precious metals, medicines, herbs and drugs. The 122mg ratti is called

desi ratti and 180mg is called badi ratti. In most of the small towns like

Dehradun, Haridwar, etc. the desi ratti is used still. I have found it beind

used in capital cities like Bhopal and Patna. Under the metric system of

measurements, a tola is defined as 10 gms and a ratti as 180 mgs.

8 Ratti = 1 Masha, 12 Masha = 1 Tola, 5 Tola = 1 Chhatank, 16

Chhatank = 1 Ser, 40 Ser = 1 Man, 1 Man= 100 Pounds troy (exact)

Desi ratti is compatible with man, ser, tola, masha system of weight

measurement. If one is measuring one's weight in SER(which is not used nowadays)

than the desi ratti should be used. But, if using kilograms, the 180 mgs ratti

is recommended. The normal procedure is to take one ratti for every ten

kilograms of body weight. For eg, if a person weighs 75 kgs, he should wear a

gem of not less than 7.5 ratti.
