How to know one's Gotra? Is this Chandra Rashi

Nakshatra Pada Anuradha ~ 3 ? I see this in my

horoscope. I went for Puja in a temple and preist was

asking about my Gotra.

Please advise where should I look in my horoscope for

my Gotra. Thanks.

Dear Mr John,

Gotra basically indicates clan and can also indicate how propagation took place

and the family with a particular title may be indicating origin/place/profession

has descended.accordingly Gotra of mittal,Goel and Bhardwaja rishi, vashist and

koundinya rishi have been identified.in temples when any worship is made, the

priest enquires name.nakshtra and gotra and makes sankalpa.

Gotra is a very important indication for all religious rites and carried from

forefathers

Dear Smith,

GOTRA is not the SURNAME, but now GOTRA just remains as surname in

many families.

Since Gotra was the group of 'cow protectors' headed by a sage, and

identified by his name,

GOTRA is limited to HINDUISM or to the people 'who do not eat beef

but protect and worship cows'.

But now, Gotra just remains as the surname or the ancestral-race name

as to identify one as the

descendant of such and such a sage. You can also refer to my previous

postings on GOTRA on this group.

So, if at all, you desire to identify your GOTRA, it is better to

choose KASHYAPA GOTRA, since

the Hinduism records sage KASHYAPA as the foremost father of human

beings. Even today, Hindus who do not

know their GOTRA choose Kashyapa Gotra. But there are some persons,

who choose SHIVA gotra or VISHNU gotra

ie the name of GOD himself as the foremost father! You can also use

the same principle if you want!

Though I do not intend to offend anyone, adding a GOTRA(cow protector)

name for name-sake, while eating beef -

do contradict each other and so bear no meaning! Keeping this in

mind, whether to use a gotra or not, is left

to one's own decision!

Very nicely elaborated and providing an option"it is better to choose KASHYAPA"

GOTRA I feel for temple poojas is okay but in case of Gayatri japa/Sandhya

Vandanam,PRAVARA becomes a difficult which is considered must for all those who

underwent upnayanam after 12 yrs.

Any light on this further please

Om Krishna Guru

Namaste Krishnan Ji, Kad Ji, David and All,

Very interesting topic and I wanted to write what I know about the

Gotra, but thought I have found a wonderful site, which descirbed in a

great detail about Gotras, so I thought of referring that to you:

http://www.bharatavarsha.com/iyer/gotra/gotra.html

Hope the above may be some help to some who are interested to know

more about Gotram's and Pravara.

Dear friend,

Arsheya, Pravara, Gotra, Sutra, Shaakhaa are of course the tags for

the identification of a follower of Vedic Path.

Usually, these are limited to Brahmin class, but also found in many

Kshatriya, Vaishya classes. Shudra class is not found

to have any such tags, except when a Shudra assumes the profession of

Sthapati(sculptor), Lohakaara(Black-smith),

SvarnaKaara(Gold-smith) etc, particularly when dealing with temple

and god, rather a holy vedic entity. So for a non-Hindu

obviously, there is no tag. Yet, there is a provision for these tags

for anyone who wants to pursue vedas -

become a disciple of a GURU who has original tags or simply a well

IDENTIFIED GURU!

One who does not know his lineage, can adopt his master's, for the

sake of identification and for the completion

of Vedic formalities. It is also seen from the past that if father's

GOTRA is unknown, mother's(ie maternal) GOTRA

is assumed or for the sake of legal matters, a maternal uncle would

adopt the boy/girl to give his own GOTRA.

So, for simplicity sake, 'Cow-protectors', studying VEDAS and

following vedic culture can surely assume the foremost KASHYAPA

gotra, a standard TRI-Arsheya of Kashyapa-Avatsara-Asita, Ashwalayana-

Apastambha etc Sutra according to their practice,

and the oldest RIK shaakha as their choice, but guided by the

preceptor.

Though, tags were made a MUST during the strict smriti period, it was

not so in Vedic and vedantic society.

The need of GOTRAs and the REAL meaning of Gotras are very well

described in the story of SATYAKAAMA JAABAALA

in Upanishads. It is a beautiful example to show how a gotra-less boy

gets his gotra, and becomes a great

philosopher! There is an upanishad dedicated to him(Shukla Yajurveda).

Interested persons can go through the story of Satyakaama Jaabaala

yours humbly,

KAD

Dear KAD,

Thnaks for: "vedic culture can surely assume the foremost KASHYAPA

gotra, a standard TRI-Arsheya of Kashyapa-Avatsara-Asita, Ashwalayana-Apastambha

etc Sutra" :answer to the point.Excellent

for anyone who wants to pursue vedas :this obligates gotra.

No relaxation for Gotra in case of interest in pursuing vedas?

Dear friend,

Arsheya, Pravara, Gotra, Sutra, Shaakhaa are of course the tags for

the identification of a follower of Vedic Path.

Usually, these are limited to Brahmin class, but also found in many

Kshatriya, Vaishya classes. Shudra class is not found

to have any such tags, except when a Shudra assumes the profession of

Sthapati(sculptor), Lohakaara(Black-smith),

SvarnaKaara(Gold-smith) etc, particularly when dealing with temple

and god, rather a holy vedic entity. So for a non-Hindu

obviously, there is no tag. Yet, there is a provision for these tags

for anyone who wants to pursue vedas -

become a disciple of a GURU who has original tags or simply a well

IDENTIFIED GURU!

One who does not know his lineage, can adopt his master's, for the

sake of identification and for the completion

of Vedic formalities. It is also seen from the past that if father's

GOTRA is unknown, mother's(ie maternal) GOTRA

is assumed or for the sake of legal matters, a maternal uncle would

adopt the boy/girl to give his own GOTRA.

So, for simplicity sake, 'Cow-protectors', studying VEDAS and

following vedic culture can surely assume the foremost KASHYAPA

gotra, a standard TRI-Arsheya of Kashyapa-Avatsara-Asita, Ashwalayana-

Apastambha etc Sutra according to their practice,

and the oldest RIK shaakha as their choice, but guided by the

preceptor.

Though, tags were made a MUST during the strict smriti period, it was

not so in Vedic and vedantic society.

The need of GOTRAs and the REAL meaning of Gotras are very well

described in the story of SATYAKAAMA JAABAALA

in Upanishads. It is a beautiful example to show how a gotra-less boy

gets his gotra, and becomes a great

philosopher! There is an upanishad dedicated to him(Shukla Yajurveda).

Interested persons can go through the story of Satyakaama Jaabaala

Dear Krishnan,

Your question: No relaxation for Gotra in case of interest in

pursuing vedas?

It is not at all necessary to have any TAGS for Vedic persuits, but

tags can identify a person; thats all!

Tagging namecards to persons, makes the society be organised and

grouped in different streams of specialization.

GOTRA plays a main role in Genetics and Marriage, Legal and Political

Inheritance, Adoption, Religious samskaras etc.

So it was the need of the society in those days and did/does not

hinder Vedic studies in any case. That is

well manifested in the story of sage Satyakaama Jaabaala.
