Before the ephemeris and the computer software appeared on the scene Indian panchangkars {those who worked out the Panchangs} worked out even the minutest details through the procedures laid down in classics like `Grah Laghava' etc. To work out the longitudes of the planets and the ascendant they used `Lankodaya man' based on `palabha' and `velantar' techniques. A very elaborate mathematics exists, and had existed in spite of the invasions, in all the classics dealing with Jyotish Ganit. The entire Indian Jyotish mathematics is contained in two volumes by shri BL Thakur {totaling 900 pages }, published by Motilal Banarasi Das , Delhi. These two volumes contain all the rules and principles laid down in Sanskrit classics, translated into Hindi. Currently the most exhaustive computer Jyotish software available, Jagganath Hora - 7, encompasses only a fraction of it. For the basic Jyotish mathematics, there is a very good chapter in ` Bhartiya Jyotish' by Nemi Chandra Jain , published by Bhartiya Gyan Peeth. The chapter deals with the basics of the Jyotish Ganit . The information contained in that chapter was a must for all astrology students before Lahiri's ephemeris and ascendant tables. Both these publications are as standard as you can get. Both the publishers are the most reputed outlets, for classics in Sanskrit and Hindi, in India. I am not aware of any publication in English. If we just ignore the mathematical issues of ephemeris and related issues,we are always able to come out with position of longitudes of plantes based on nakshtra padas. Once Late Shri Raman reiterated all of jyotish is not matical to work out various calculations and infer good and bad.This ofcourse beyond any conjecture. Even the popular Astrologcal Magazine of late Shri B.V.Raman......."Who else except Brahma can say with certainity what will definetely happen?" This is most relevant in any situation Place of birth,relevance to position of moon and Sun are most vital to find how other planets are placed and how these plantes are getting influenced in various dasas in operation.
