Guest guest
Dear friends 1. Panchangs: I wonder if any of you use Panchangs. This question is because last year one of the List-members asked me to send him one to the US. I went to the shop (in Bombay) & there were quite a few different ones, all apparently popular, one from Rishikesh, one from Benares, 3 from various parts of the South. Since each was only around Rs 30- 50, I just bot all that were in Hindi & sent. Again just y'day I recd another request, which I intend to comply in Sept, as thats when the coming year's wd be released Now by funny chance, yesterday itself, I saw on another computer screen in my office (I shall NOT tell u the office I work in!!!) the Panchang icon (under the astrology icon in the www.rediff.com site). This morning I opened the site on my desk. It states: "The Rediff Panchang is true traditional Hindu Panchang based on the Hindu calendar, computing the auspicious time to start anything new. The calculations are done using modern astronomical Ephemeris on a Nirayana basis. It can be termed a Drigh-ganith Panchang" What does the above really mean? Is it like the "real" printed Panchangs that are normally there in most of our houses (ie when we used to live with our parents before getting married, & becoming nuclear families, etc etc). Could I request someone on this List who actually uses/ has used a Panchang, to please look at the rediff site. Because IF it is a "real" Panchang, I shall just tell all my foreign friends to log on to it, instead of sending him printed Panchangs, & avoid the hassle of it getting lost in post & the fact that the Panchang wd necessarily be in a vernacular language which my foreign friends wd have to decipher (also: are English Panchangs released? I hv never seen one in print, apart from these soft ones in astro-sites?). As these requests will coming in (for all of us based in India from those abroad), you MAY want to take special effort for me, in showing this site to your parents and asking their opinion. Pl dont ask me what I mean by "Real", 'cos if I knew, I wd not have asked this question? 2. Name: My daughter was born under Janm-nak (Mn) of Srav1 last month. I looked up Kalprakashika which says the name is supposed to "start" from ga/ ja in various forms. Subhakaran's Nakshatras book says the same thing. It also states that this reinforcement of Janm nak by the name was more useful in earlier days to quickly identify the janm-nak in case of forgetting etc, (& implied: may not be that constraining to parents frantically fending off thous of sugestions from elderly laws & in-laws, ie just choose a name the baby can live with). 2 qns: a) is the only rule that of initial syllable based on janm-nak? b) any views on naming by naks in general? Regards & thanks Nandan
Guest guest
Namasthe. Flushing, NY Mahaganapathi Temple has brought out Panchangam in English through a well known Jyotishi in Kanchi Shankara peetam. I have checked it, and it matches the many vernacular panchangams.
